For me, Alessandro MS-1 or Grado SR60 >> HD497.

With your criteria, there's no reason why you should purchase anything over a Grado/Alessandro in that price range.

Currently listening to: "Angeldust" by Strung Out on my SR225 w/Flat Pads.

HD497's is where it's at. They are sensational. The better the recording of what you are listening to, the better the sound of course. So don't listen to no rubbish and expect the phones to do all the work.

Since your budget is $200 Max, you may want to consider the A900s. As for grados, I think you should try them first. I find they seem to be either you love them or severely hate them. I do like the 497's alot more than the sr60s, which goes to show how much of headfi is personal preference. I haven't heard the PX100's so I'm not sure how much of an "upgrade" the 497s may or may not be above them.

To be honest, I think I'm going to just shut up and get an amp. It seems like an easier and more practical solution than to buy something like the HD497s or even the SR60s in addition to the PX100s which should be arriving this week. I'm thinking about the the Meier Porta Corda MKII (alas I didn't make the group buy *D'oh!*). So I'll probably order that direct or from a place like:

I'm also considering HeadRoom Airhead or the SIMPL ACOUSTICS Simpl A1, but impressions of those two, seem to consider them mediocre at best. I'll probably need a mini to mini cable to go with that as well as a power supply (I think)

I'll probably end up pairing it with the Sennheiser HD580, 590s 595s, 600s, the Grado SR225s or something like the Alessandro MS1 or 2.

Jan Meier makes em anyway, no matter where you order from... he also makes the ones todd sells, so you can order a US voltage version directly from him.
Payment concerns.. that's your problem

Don't get me wrong, I have the money. But I'm a bit nervous about using Paypal and those types of payement systems and I'm unsure of the process surrounding that.
