Getting a good seal with the e3c..

Thread Starter
I got my e3c yesterday. I love it - I did not know how much clarity and detail I was missing, especially midrange, compared to the Sony MDR-EX71SL. I do kind of miss the heavy-ish bass the Sony gave me, but the e3c DEFINITELY makes up for it by providing a punchier, tighter bass (now I know why you guys describe it that way..haha) that doesn't take away from the song I'm listening to.

Also, something that I haven't seen anyone report on the forums is that I have to turn the volume down compared to my Sony's. When listening to my iRiver H320, I had the volume at 18-20 with my Sony's. However, with the Shure e3c, I have to turn the volume to 8-10 to achieve the same volume level. This is yet another plus because it will mean more battery time for my DAP ^^.

But! I have one small problem. I can wear the Shure's properly (I think) but I am actually getting worse isolation than I do with the Sony's. I'm using the soft grey flex tips right now, and I really have to push them in to achieve any kind of seal, but they unseal rather easily. I know my isolation is not as good, because with the DAP turned off and the e3c on, I can hear ambient noise. With my Sony 71's, this was not the case (well a little ambient noise, but largely muffled).

So - to all the e3c owners out there - do you guys have any better methods of isolation? Or is my experience pretty much what other people are getting? Is investing in a pair of triflanges worth it? If you used triflanges, did you mod it? And how?

Alright, thanks for any answers!

I would experiment with different tips. Maybe move up to the largest flex sleeves to see if they provide a more tighter fit. Have you tried the foamies too? I'm not sure if the Tri-Flange sleeves fit on the E3's, but I think they would be worth a shot as well.

you need to use the yellow foamies, the grey buds are not good for isolation. The yellow foamies shoud do the trick and increase bass response to boot.

I've had the E3's for about 3 or 4 months now and the best tips for me have been the modified Ety ER-4 tri-flanges. Just cut off the smallest flange with an Exacto knife and you get a great seal that's much easier to get in and out than the foamies, which, by the way, I also like. I just like the "Bi-flanges" better.

Foamies are the only ones to provide perfect seal for my ears.

I'm fairly certain that you volume issue is due to a higher sensitivity in the e3c's. A higher sensitivity means the phone in easier to drive so the volume is higher with a given input, but I'm not absolutly positive that's right.
