I'm looking for a pair of AKG 501s (new, with the "new" pads!) to go with my iPod , PIMETA and PortaCorda (soon..). What is your Head-Fi price on these 'phones?

I'll keep this very short. They are very smooth sounding. Treble toned down so not so good for rock but have a magic about them that makes them better than mark 2. I use them with a '89/'90...

Bought these on whim, for your basic train ride to work I don't mind. But its far from being the best I have own.

First, I should note that I auditioned these both straight out of the box, without any break-in time and then later after 53 hours of break-in. Recent scientific studies have shown definite...

A very all-round headphone for me. Just the right one to take on the go or on holiday. Also as a DJ, nice noice isolation. Very durable so you don't have to wonder if it will break if you throw...

This quick review is done after a few hours of listening. I bought them from B&H for the decent sum of 150$. If you've done your research you'll find out that Ultrasone HPs are known for their...

HI mls64,
The AKG K501 price is listed on my website and click for a quote to see the price. I am not allowed to publish it so I cannot give you a quote here. You can call me or PM me for the pricing...
The official word from AKG is that there is no difference in the pads on the K501. No changes have been made.

I know this is a old Thread, but I am looking for a amp or a DAC/Amp that would be powerful enough to drive K501. I have RSA Tomahawk and Predator, but Ray confirmed with me that they are not enough to drive K501. Do you have any suggestion? My budget is around $500. hopefully within $500.

However for most the Hornet M, TTVJ Millet, or the SR-71 would be better. Good luck.

At that price wouldn't it be better to go with a desktop amp, such as the CKK3?

That's the CK2III from AMB. You can find more here:
The Cavalli-Kan Kumisa III Stereo Headphone Amplifier
I built one a little after the PCBs were released. Excellent little amp and it does well with the K-501. I have not heard the Cantate, so I can't compare.
I can say that the parts for the CK2III are a bit cheaper, though.
However, I still the K-501 is at its best when driven by tubes. For $500, you could probably find a used Singlepower PPX3, which is terrific with the K-501. Check the For Sale Forum and look at the others, as well.

The Green Solo, the Musical Fidelity X-Can V2, or the O2 Headphone/DAC all do well. The last two are much cheaper ($175 or $250 respectively).

I'm driving the APS V2-recabled K501 with the Bada PH-12 (3x 6SN7 & 2x Toshiba 2SK1529 MosFET) and am very, very happy with the synergy. Ditto for the RAL-recabled K701! : )
