However, if you don't want to have a two-piece music server, I'd highly recommend going with one of the Via C3 mini-itx machine and work from there. You can get 'em with complete passive cooling, even at 1GHz, so the only noise would be from the HD. Surprisingly, they don't have the Envy24 chipset, so you'll still need a separate audio card.

I wouldn't recommend going /too/ cheap, but I think you feel the same way ('relatively cheap cdrom'). While the Plextor drives are good, their big advantages aren't just with reading dirty CDs: they're also good at working with copy protection (may or may not be an issue), amongst other things that no doubt you've seen already.
