0404 Q: ASIO Signals showing but no audio

Hi
Trying to get ASIO going. WAV output works from both winamp and foobar.

I uninstalled both the onboard mobo sound and the SB Live I have in my PC. Then installed the 0404. It works with fine in my 44.1kHz session.

I can see the signal on the Peak Meter from both Winamp and Foobar so I suspect I've got my PatchMix setup incorrectly. First I'll give my winamp and foobar configs, then all the PatchMix info I can give, hopefully someone will see something obvious. I've read the manual, but only got the card today, so I don't fully understand it yet :P

Winamp:
Installed ASIO plugin from here: http://www3.cypress.ne.jp/otachan/out_asio(exe)_052a.zip
All the options in the ASIO config window (even those I don't think have any affect WRT my problem):
Device: EMU ASIO
Process Priority: high
Thread Priority: Time Critical
Buffer Size: 7
shift output channels: 0
gapless mode / 1 channel to 2 channels and direct monitor all disabled
Resampling: enabled
Thread Priority: Highest
Sample Rate: 96000kHz
Quality: Top
When I play music with these settings, I can see the signal coming into PatchMix.

Foobar:
Output: ASIO (dll version)
Device: EMU ASIO
Thread Priority: Time critical
Buffer Size: 7
Shift output channels: 0
Direct Input Monitor disabled
Playback output data format: 32bit fixed. everything else unchecked
Resampler enabled and set to 96000

PatchMix (I'll try to use the correct terminology):
I have ASIO Out 1 / 2 and WAVE L / R strips, plus PCI L/PCI R/S/PDIF but I don't think those are relevant to playback.
I've had "sends" to WAVE L/R HOST and ASIO L/R HOST under the "Effect" section on both channels but it doesn't make any difference.

Where should my sends be, and/or what am I missing?
I can see the signal coming in from winamp and foobar, but no sound.

Until I get this sorted out, I'll be listening using 44.1kHz. Thanks for anyone's help in advance!

On a side note, playing a particular album, Winamp used a more or less constant 25% of the CPU and 25meg of ram whereas Foobar used 10% CPU and 6meg ram.

Try removing all the SENDs.

i believe your player program has to be set up to play ASIO too - foobar can play ASIO, itunes (what i use ) can't.

Have you tried messing with all the volume settings within patchmix? There's three of them--the strip level on the lower left-hand corner of the box, the monitor volume on the lower right hand corner of the box (I think this is turned all the way down when you first install the software) and the main mix volume which is just to the left of the monitor volume.

Thanks for the replies.

Removing all the sends didn't change anything. I also realised there is a "Main Send" section right next to the master volume control. I had a play with that but to no avail too.

Both players are outputting ASIO signals, as the ASIO strip shows the signal coming in. If I switch to waveout in foobar and winamp, the signal moves to the appropriate strip in PatchMix as expected. So I believe I've got the players outputting the correct format (that's why I put all that info in my post).

Volume settings are all at 0dB (I can hear all audio perfectly with that volume for wave output). And the signal is happily floating around the yellow section "with occasional forays into the red" and the manual suggests.

Back to the drawing board....

What other specific info can I give to help solve the problem?

Could you post a screenshot of your PatchMix DSP settings?

Developments!

Hi,

I just tried out ASIO at 44.1 and it works fine. I wonder why 96kHz doesn't work!

I'll have to have a look further down my chain, as it may involve my amplifier (although I know for a fact it can receive 96kHz and I don't believe I need to change anything for what frequency I use).

Small steps at a time

Anyway, just out of curiousity, for just listening to music, and since foobar and winamp both use too much resources for my liking when upsampling, I was thinking of just using ASIO at 44.1kHz from now on. Sure I want to figure out why 96 isn't happening, but if cd audio is 44.1 to start with, and I can't choose 88.2kHz, I don't really see a point in upsampling.

And anyway... what does ASIO give me that waveout doesn't?

Thanks for you're help(s)

PatchMix memory use

Although, now I've noticed PatchMix uses 20meg or more ram just by itself (at idle, not even playback)! Is there any way to reduce this?? Seems like a fair hit.

Mr Radar

Can do!

I've included all the shots I think are possible, i.e. looking at the different tabs.

Try changing the PCI Card Out (as seen in your 4th screenshot) to Mix instead of Mon.

Thanks.

The mix / monitor change didn't make any difference. I have to look into verifying my amp is set up correctly, I've got a suspicion it's related to that.

Will let you know of any developments
