Just got 0404 - fluctuating volume?

Hi just got my 0404.
Intended to get it going in a very basic form, just not using ASIO or anything tricky. I installed the drivers that came in the box and then updated to the ones from emu.com.

I'm getting sound, but with all default settings, the volume is fluctuating up and down. It happens through Winamp and Windows Media Player. And for all my music (mp3 and CDs played through my dvdrom).

I've disabled all sound effects I could find in PatchMix DSP.

I'm most confused and not sure where to look to fix it! I'll continue reading the manual but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Never mind!

Never mind!
My amplifier was setup to recevice Dolby but of course I'm only pumping it with stereo. I'm surprised this caused weird stuff with the sound, I wouldn't have expected it to work at all! And I'm guessing possibly i was getting weird decoding of the signal, leading to the apparent fluctuating and my swearing I was not hearing half the music I knew was there!

OK. Now to move onto getting ASIO working

PS, even using Winamps simple WAV out, I can hear the improvement with the 0404 over the SB Live!

Gawd, I hope so. I think a deaf person could honestly tell the difference between the two, its like going from living in a shack in the ghetto to a nice upper middle class suburb, not small by any stretch of the imagination.
