I linked you up

I have a feeling many people will rate per price. So they'll give a headphone 10 for bass even though it only deserves 8, just because it's such amazingly good value.

For a good example:
Px100 has a detail of "7" and ms-2 "6.5". I'm almost certain that the px100 does not have better detail then the ms-2. As such, this is poorly scored and should be fixed to be more like.. 5 i'd think

Similarly, aparently the px100 is better than the MS-1 in every way except mids. I'm not exactly sure that i beleive this at all

I agree that strict criteria should have been set. Remember, headphonereviews.org's ratings are on an absolute scale, irrespective of price. However, far too many people have factored in price with their judgment of sound quality - and thus, some of the ratings are skewed unfairly.

That said, there are a few astronomically expensive headphones that IMHO severely underperformed, to the point which they actually sound worse than some headphones priced 100 times less, even on high-end equipment.

I do what I can to maintain review quality, and I figure it'll all work itself out once there's a decent number of reviews for each headphone. I don't moderate individual reviews, but if someone scores things consistently badly I drop them to junior member and the scores they give are ignored.

I can't moderate every review and decide what I do and don't like, that'd partly remove the point of the site. If there's anything clearly wrong contact me using the contact form and i'll decide whether i'll remove it or not. Two senior members have given the PX100 similar scores so i'll probably be leaving them along.

The more people that register and review headphones the better the site will be!

Just a reminder to people about the site, and a request to add reviews of headphones you have experience with. The site's been fully operational for around three months now, and i'm suprised that with a community of this site there's only 146 reviews in the system. Sure it's helpful to people as it is, but it'd be even more useful when we have a dozen or more reviews for at least each of the most popular models of headphones. We're short on canal phone reviews too, especially from people that have experience with more than one type.

A reminder also that linking to the site from your websites will help it move up the google search results when people search for headphone reviews, so people get good advice rather than bad advice from sites such as CNet. You can use this html to link to the site:

Code:

Congratulations, your site is becoming more and more useful.

Thanks Feanor, and everyone else, send in your reviews!

Could some people please post a review for the A500s? Thanks.

Thanks for the site - it is very helpful as is - especially the number ratings. With more ratings it will be the authority on the web, I think.

I would post some reviews but I am still a newbie - just got some Sony V6s and HD25-sp phones. Soon to have HD280s. I have had the PX100s for a few years.

See what I mean? You would probably rank me a junior member or less.

I'm very disaspointed with the support the site's gotten from head-fi members. It's been up and running for three months and there's only 146 reviews in the system. For a site as busy as head-fi, and with so many experienced members, I expected more. It takes about 2 minutes to register and 2 minutes per review, it's not really such a big ask for someone to spend 5-10 minutes doing a few reviews, is it? Because of the lack of support i'm not doing active maintenance despite having a few ideas how to improve the site.

I'll reassess things at the 6 month mark, and if things haven't improved i'll shut it down.

commando, hi

I just saw your post in head-fi about beeing disapointed
with the number of reviews in your site.

I think you are doing a good work, and a valid contribution.

So you were expecting more reviews?
Well, adjust your expectations, be more realistic,
grow slower is to grow too.

Dont shut the site down.
If you have ideas for improving the site, do them.

As site quality improves, there will be more reviews.
Dont rush things, time can be your friend too.

The site works just like I designed, there's nothing else to do to achieve it's basic function, IMHO. If anyone disagrees, please let me know what you think it needs. I think it needs more reviews, as it gives more data to work with, and will provide better results for people.

One idea I have is to select two headphones and have people write a comparative review of them. Perhaps it could even be done with three or four. That'd mean people wanting to choose between similar headphones would be able to choose more easily. eg Shure E3 vs Ety 61, or A900 vs AKG 271 vs Ultrasone etc. The thing is with so few reviews I don't know if anyone would bother writing a comparative review.

Maybe i'll do an email out to all members to encourage them to submit some more reviews, and send me ideas for improvements. I'm not going to bother with improvements unless the site gets more support, no point wasting my time when i'm already busy enough, and my day job is already developing software - who wants to do that on your own time?!

I like the comparative reviews idea. Headphones are too subjective to reduce it down to a number. Maybe you can use a few very popular/well known headphones as reference points. Say hd650 is an 8. Then reviewers can base their review off of 650, giving a more accurate assessment than a mere number.

Nah, that won't work. You compare them to each other, the only thing that's important are the relative numbers. I might even go with poor/average/great to make things simple.

I'll only bother if the site gets quite a few more review. I'll send an email to members when I get around to it.

An email sounds good. Maybe they just don't know about the site?

Commando, perhaps you should try PMing a few people here with big experience, maybe they missed this thread about the site and would be willing to write.
