Custom HD580 Impulse!

For those of you who use the foobar2k and the HD580, here is a little something I made (it might also work with an HD650 to some extent, but it wouldn't be as good a match). I think it's really quite something (well, it's certainly not perfect; it compensates for some of the Senns' weaknesses, but highlights some other weaknesses), but I thought I'd share it and see what others think. So here goes:

HD580 impulse file for foobar2k

Instructions:
0) Download file from above link.
1) Turn off all sound modifications you already use on your setup, if any. (that is, turn off all other equalizers or etc, software or hardware)
2) Go to the Foobar2k File > Preferences >> Playback > DSP Manager > Convolver, click on the "load impulse" button, and load up the HD580.wav file from wherever you downloaded it to.
3) Make sure the "Level adjust" is on +0.0 dB (in the same menu), and "Mix adjust" is 100%.
4) Go to Foobar2k File > Preferences >> Playback > DSP Manager, and move "Convolver" to the active (left) window.
5) Listen, and I'd appreciate it if you take the time to comment on what you think of it. Anything you like about it, or don't like about it. A/Bing the change is as easy as switching the convolver active/inactive in the DSP Manager menu.

Warning: I will not be held responsible for any illusions about the HD580 that may be shattered as a result of the use of above impulse file.

[edit: it should also work with the HD600. *cough* I totally forgot about them. Apologies to all HD600 owners...]

Just tried it briefly with my HD600s, and everything felt really light. Not really there and distant.

Only my initial impressions. only listened for about 30secs.

Will give it some more listening...

What exactly does this do? Sorry for being a noob about this.

A convolver is called the "mother of all plugins." It's a piece of code that is capable of doing basically any sort of modification, bar none (almost), on sound output given an appropriate "impulse file." Any equalization, gain, chorus, reverb, you name it. The impulse file, based on the modification of a single unit pulse, a "click," can be thought of a single "unit" of modification, a baseline to which all sound is referred to. It's extremely powerful but at the same time, it's not easily modifiable as with a graphic equalizer or a slider.

Same here. Listened to it for a bit, went back to normal, and the sound felt much more full and involving.

Does the HD580/600 really need something to make it sound even more distant?

Same here. I lost all sorts of bass with my HD600's and things did seem farther away. This is with a light listening period of Coltrane.

Interesting...I find the convolved sound much more upfront and involving. I suppose it's either a case of preference, or synergy, or both.

Oh, and a note: the impulse automatically lowers the overall level of the music by a few dB. So if you're not changing the volume as well, you'll obviously hear it as more distant - since it's softer!

Yeah, the music seemed to lose a lot of body and substance, especially in the bass.

Also, especially after adjusting the volume level for the loss, the music sounds... "tinny." That's the best I can describe it, it's as if the highs got sent through a metal tube. In fact, it's starting to give me a headache.

The music did also seem slightly more forward, after adjusting the volume, at least the highs and vocals did. This is only somewhat noticable, because the loss of ambience makes the whole thing seem A LOT more distant, but vocals seem more forward relative to the rest of the music. They also seem less clearly defined.

This is with my 650s, but that's not too different from the 580.
