Early Impressions: PS-1 Pro Senn Cables - Page 2

Ah, but one was balanced, totally invalidating your test. Give me a break.

Except I ran it in single-ended (standard) mode with a Moon Audio XLR->1/4 converter (made for using the balanced Silver Dragon in standard mode) and I still heard differences in bass control (a large difference) and treble smoothness (very subtle). There is a difference between the standard PS-1 (RS-1, MS-Pro) cable vs. the JGUWB cable featured in certain HP-1000s (and the difference is an improvement over the stock PS-1 cable, IMO). I'm happy that you're enjoying your re-cabled PS-1 (and I bet it probably sounds better than even gpalmer's re-cabled PS-1) but there's no need to be an @ss, Biggie.

touche.

I tell it as I see it and I believe you now.

In the other thread you only mentioned running them in balanced mode, hence what my comments were refering to.

Thoughts...

I only mentioned running them in balanced mode because of the soundstage increase (quite incredible for a Grado) and bass control (which is due to both the improved cable and balanced operation, IMO). I admit that the difference between the PS-1 cable and HP-1000 cable are far less significant than the HD650 cable vs. the Zu Mobius, but they still exist. I’m certain your re-cabling moves further beyond the effects of gpalmer’s re-cabling and I’m curious about your PS-1, especially regarding the control of the overwhelming bass - does your current system adequately control that bass or is it still a bit too over-powering?

My amp uses 8 tubes and has no feedback so controlling the bass isn't hard.
The tubes I used when I had the rs-1's were much too bass heavy, and the bass actually intruded on the mids, it was not good. I'm quite happy with the tubes I use now that Zanth sold me. I do like a good dose of bass though, as long as it isn't bothering the rest of the frequencies.

My new cable is around the same bass heaviness as the old cable, but it has more fullness to it, and yet its tighter, clearer and faster. Before I couldn't hear the extended low-end people talked about, I just heard the lower octaves being played back louder then the rs-1 does. Now that the extra bloat in the bass has been cleared away, I can hear that they do indeed go lower then the rs-1's.

Whats really impressed me about the cable is the increased smoothness. Before the sound was liquiid, but it was missing that last bit of liquidness that the omega II's are known for. Close but no cigar. Half way between rs-1 and omega 2's I would say. Now with the upgrade, the omega may still be more liquid then this, but I don't care, because to me there is nothing to be desired anymore. ^^

The other thing I'm noteing is the soundstage. Recordings in my system had nice depth in my system before, but the placement on the singer was always the same, a little bit less forward then the rs-1's. Now depending on the track, the singer may be up in my face or far off in the distance, and everything is very focused.

The other things I'm noticing is that everything is oh so clear and free of distortions. Also the prat is even better then before. Cymbals just blaze. The tone is similar to the old cable. I have to say this cable has been quite the pleasent suprise.

Thread Starter
Update: The PS-1 Pro Senn cables are history. Listening fatigue proved to be too much of an issue for me to continue using them, 2 hours of use at most and I'm done. They were recently disassembled and the Senn plugs used for another cable project.

There's no real changes to my initial impressions, but I'd like to add a few more notes. As I mentioned back then, the 580's don't quite "disappear" as well as before, and the sound always seems to be coming from something. This got a little better after a few weeks but it never went away and proved to be quite annoying with some of my music.

The highs were a tad more extended, but not in a good way. They always seemed to draw attention to themselves and didn't really fit in with the rest of the music. That and some harshness is what I think ended up causing the listening fatigue.

It was definitely an educational experiment, and I learned that Grado cables are not really that much better than Senn cables when used on Senns. Thanks once again to NotoriousBIG_PJ for making it all possible.
