Today I stumbled upon headphile's new AKG K1000 replacement cables (www.headphile.com) and with all the AKG 1000 / Sonic Impact talk at the moment, I thought this might be interesting. Some time ago, Larry did mention a cable of this sort but at that time it wasn't final yet.
It connects to the AKG via 4 Pin XLR and terminates to either 1/8 or 1/4 (for normal headphone sockets) or bare leads (for connecting the AKGs to an integrated or poweramp) or balanced XLR (both female and male). The pricing seems very fair, too. The cheapest is $70 for half a meter. Considering the improvement the Headphile cable made for my HD 650, this might be a relatively inexpensive way (compared to the Equinox cable) of increasing the AKG's performance.
