Headroom Bithead/Total Bithead - How does it measure up?

Hi there

A first post from a budding Headphonophile

I'm deeply in love with my new Sennheiser HD280 Pro (my first foray into HiFi) but I can just hear them crying out for some decent amplification.

Seeing that I do most of my listening at work (Dell PC, Foobar with CD-Audio and High-Quality Audio files) the Headroom Bithead looks like the perfect device ... seemingly killing two birds with one stone (DAC + Amp). I can also use it on my laptop at home and I don't have to crack open my work PC to replace soundcards - which could take some doing with out IT dept.

so my question is: How does the Bithead compare to other sound cards? is the DAC reasonably good? Can anybody provide any info/ reviews/ comparisons?

I've read a few reviews on other websites, but I would really appreciate a response from this forum.

thanks

I'm using a Total Bithead at work with my HD280s and am very happy with it. The main reason I got it was because my work PC has a Soundblaster, which doesn't really sound that great...plus the amplification always helps. There is no question that the headphones sounds better with the Total Bithead. Is it $269 worth of improvement? That's up to you to find out.

If isolation is not important to you (it is for me, lots of people talking all around me at work), you may be better served by a decent sound card and open headphones, however.

The unit itself is pretty straightforward...just plug it in and it works. I'm using Foobar2000 with a special equalizer setting I made for the HD280 which improves the sound of the headphone dramatically (perhaps even more than the Total Bithead)...so with the two (Total Bithead + equalizer in Foobar2000) I'm able to comfortably listen to music for hours at work (this coming from someone with a very nice home setup).

Has anyone compared these to an amped AV-710 or EMU 0404m (with an airhead, to keep it the same I guess)? That would be very useful.

SCRITH: Thanks for the reply ... sounds like you have the same setup as me (besides the bithead).
I'd be very interested to see your Foobar EQ settings for the HD280s.
