Need an HDTV on a budget - Page 2

I just got back from Circuit City where i had the opportunity to view the old Sony 36inch Wega that the 955 replaced (I believe it was the 420). I really hope the 955 is substantially better, or that the signal it was being fed was just aweful because the rig failed to impress. Colors bled, the picture was slightly grainy and the geomety sucked hard (people looked like giraffes). I'm guessing this setup was just miserable as enthusists rave about these sets, but I'm as newbie as it gets and was severely dissapointed.

Oh well--hopefully the 36xs955 will be a lot better.

I will be getting 60" LCD in Feb 2005......unless I change my mind and go DLP, but so far the LCD picture is best for my taste, plasma too expensive. Have 3K budgetted for TV and stand, will work out deal at local Best Buy.

When you were in CC did you really look close at newest 50" LCD/DLP TVs?
Would you really rather have 36" CRT vs 50" LCD/DLP if money not a factor?

Do yourself a favor & take a trip to the Sony Plaza at 55th & madison
check out the Ton of tvs(plasma,Dlp, Crt) they have downstairs next to the Qualia room, you can check out the Qualia projector while your at it as well as the 010s.
The 34xbr960 is a killer TV & would be my choice in a crt.

DA,

I'm they type of guy who will never be satisfied with what he has, so of course I'd prefer the bigger, better setup, however. Given the fact that money is a factor and that at this time I have zero income (I'm a full time law student), It doesn't really matter what I'd like to own under better circumstances.
I do get what your saying though about saving for something better--but if I don't bite on this soon, it won't happen.

Booze,

I'd love to hit up the Sony store and do just that, but I'm only back on the island until the 30th (then I'm shooting to Chicago to see the gf), and I don't think I'll get a chance to make the trip before then. Does anyone know off hand if theres a major Sony store in Chicago? that would be a lot more doable for me.

Hmm, that's too bad. I had a similar problem when I started looking for a TV - in most stores (especially Best Buy), the HD CRT tubes just looked awful despite the favorable reviews on AVS. Often it was obvious they were sending the CRTs a much lower grade signal than the relatively pristine signals being fed to the digital panel displays (which of course carry higher profit margins). I eventually visited a Circuit City that had its CRTs set up right (some with DVD and some with HD), and they looked excellent. Personally it was difficult for me to take the online reviews on faith without seeing with my own eyes, so when I finally confirmed that the reviewers were correct in their praises I purchased my set right away. I've been very happy with my purchase - this TV is worlds apart from the Panasonic L300u LCD projector I previously owned. Good luck in the remainder of your quest

I called Cox Communications today and got a plesant suprise with their service line up. For $95 a month I can get HBO, Cinemax, HDHBO, CBSHD, NBCHD, PBSHD, ESPNHD, and 2 pay-per-view HD channels, Digital cable w/ boxes, and cable modem. I'd previously been paying $80 for basic cable (no hbo) and high speed internet so I feel like I'd be getting a lot more for my $15.

So far this is seeming more and more do-able. I'm gonna try again to audition a 955 today. I really hope I could be happy with that television--judging by the reviews, I'm sure I could be.

Feel free to chime in with any other recommendations. I'm not gonna buy the television till mid January when I return to school from x-mas break.

Damned, I wish we got cox cable here. For the same price, comcast does not give you any premium channel.
