Yes, if you do a google search on "headphone attenuator" you find a few thingies, though they look to be targetted at HAM radio operators, radio shack do an inline volume control for headphones but I am not sure what the quality would be like.

the main problem with purchasing an already made attenuator is it can never be a perfect fit since the manufacturer has no way of knowing what your equipment is and can not match the impedances prescisley.
The assumption is that source driving the attenuator will be low,say 100 to 600 ohms and the next stage above 10K ohms but if you have equipment with non-standard output impedances or use tube gear you could lose high frequencies.I am not saying that what will happen in your specific case but it is something to think about.

the good news is that even if you are afraid of DIY it is only a couple of resistors and there are java script attentuator calculators on the internet that make designing it simple.Four resistors in a box will do it.

Goldenjacks attenuators

Having lived with these for a month I am very happy with the results. There does not seem to be any loss of detail, bass may be a bit better but that is slight. In any case the ability to turn the volume control above 7pm is welcomed. Overall the GSP Mk II, AKG 501 and attenuators make a pretty good combination.

I bought these from a guy called Iain Lamb from ebay.co.uk. They cost me about 20UKP or I guess about $38 plus shipping. The guy sells a lot of these

You are correct, but the two terms are used pretty interchangeably anyway so I dont think I have done too much damage
