Brahms Symphonies and Concerti - Page 2

My favourites have been suggested above, so I second....third...fourth the following.

Symphonies: Abbado/BPO and Toscanini. Karajan's early vesrions are well worth listening to.

Piano Concerti: Gilels with Jochum

Violion Concerto: Henryk Szeryng or David Oistrach

DA ends up costing us all money. You own many Brahms sets DA, but if you can only have one, what would it be?

I have no hesitation saying favorite set is:
Jochum/EMI 1,2,3 + Kleiber/DG 4

These are pictured in my earlier post and available used at Amazon, a relatively painless hit to the wallet.

I saw this post and the two words "picture and wallet" sprung up before I read the post and I immediately thought DA had a picture of these in his wallet. No I have not been drinking egg nog.

I looked for these recordings in our local Hastings (pretty bad selection but at least there is a classical selection unlike most of the chains). I will be ordering them from Amazon in the next few days.

Any Serenade comments/recommendations?

I used to listen to these a lot, but haven't in some time. The Kertesz version of the #1 on London is well recorded and a nice transparent performance. The old Stokowski has more zip, but inferior sound.

For #2, I still like the Bernstein on Columbia. I haven't hear the Schwarz yet; looking forward to them!

Is that Jochum EMI 1,2,3 out-of print?

PS - I took advantage of the DG sale on the Tower Records web site, ordered the Klieber DG that DA recommended....I think DA works for the record companies

Edit: Never mind, read DA's post more closely...used...yes...duh

Jochum is on Amazon in the "buy new and used" area.

Also worth considering is Sanderling's set of the symphonies with the Staatskapelle Dresden, on Eurodisc. I am also fond of Bruno Walter's set, available on Sony. Both of these sets are more relaxed than Szell, and this approach seems to suit the music better, at least for me.

For the violin concerto, I still favor Oistrakh, with either Klemperer or Konwitschny.

Has anybody heard the Mackerras Brahms cycle on Telarc? I've had it for a while, and since this thread has me working my way through various performances, I thought I'd ask. It's a much lighter orchestral sound than I'm accustomed to, supposedly informed by the "original performance practice" movement. I enjoy the transparency and the inner voices Mackerras brings out. On the other hand I sometimes wish the tempi were a bit slower. He shortchanges the listener at times, moving expeditiously whien I'd prefer he linger a bit more.

Today I picked up:

I know it's not the one mentioned before, but I thought I'd give it a whirl. I had some money left on my B&N gift card.
