So you used the double of AWG of copper for ground instead of signal??? Well I used the two blues for one channel, the two whites for the other, and ran the ground through the shielding, this way you have the double of copper in both signal channels, and the shielding is still pretty thick for common ground....add a ferrite at the end just in case and period....it works like a charm, pretty transparent as I told you....if you want for curiosity try both configurations, I will try the one you used later on to see.

Well technically twice the current flows through ground compared to signal, and I didn't want to make anything run through the shield... (connected only at the source end)

But maybe I should try the other config too anyway.

I read from the DIY IC thread that it's better to use the white wires for signal.
Something in the blue dye hurt the sound quality they say, food for thoughts.

Technically twice? Well if you consider that you have two channels running in the ground, yep it should be double, but then consider also that all the manufacturers of headphones use only one for the ground. OTOH the shielding is as thick as the double of any of the wires or more, just peal it and twisted and you will see the gauge it almost 16AWG or even thicker.
Another point to consider is that you are not using the shielding other than maybe for RMI/RF rejection, don't you think that it will be wasted, if you have no problems of that kind, and besides that you will gain the double of cooper in both channels...

BTW I also asked many of the DIYers before doing mine, as it seems to be a pretty tricky configuration, and mostly all of them offer me the same recomendation...if you were using the cable as for example inside a headphone (as I was planning to use it on the CD3000) and use one pair for each channel, and just solder the ground at the end of the plug, it is more understandable, for crosstalk rejection or whatever....but soldering both from the beginning to the end, but who knows for sure, maybe the differences will be very subtle region, if any.....

I think the Switchcrafts are a little nicer, but for the price this is great. The opening of the Neutrik is also a bit small and I don't think it will fit full sized starquad. Mini should fit fine though.
I use these instead. I don't know how well Canare Starquad would fit thru the 4mm opening on the gold ones... these are 0.25" (6+mm) and fit Starquad perfectly. I'm not a believer in hearing differences in plating (or white versus blue wires... hehe), so the nickel plating doesn't bother me a bit. These appear to be constructed well, but I haven't directly compared them to Switchcraft or Canare or Cardas.

amphenol makes some very nice products. I'm very fond of their 1/4" plugs.
