rca -> 1/8" = quality loss?

if got a .5 meter interconnect that im turning into a mini-to-mini using gold plated radio shack rca > 1/8" headphone adaptors. Will the good qualities of the cable be maintained or will the quality reduce? Thanks.

Probably reduced. The more 'connections' you have the worse off you'll be. A solid mini-mini would be ideal, using adapters creates an extra step for the signal.

Now will the reduction be noticeable? Only if your setup is high end enough to reveal such subtleties.

I've never been very impressed with the Radio Shack RCA to 1/8" miniplug adapters I've had. I did however just receive an Audioquest RCA to mini adapter from Needledoctor yesterday, and the build quality is much better than the RS pieces. You might want to look into the AQ adapter.

Cardas...

Save yourself the hassle and just buy the Cardas for $20.

I also have some real nice interconnects I'd rather use vs. buying mini to mini IC's all over.

Absolutely do NOT use the Radio Shack mini-to-rca adapters. They sound truly horrendous, shaving off top and bottom and detail.

The Audioquest mini-to-rca adapter is the best sounding one I've ever used/bought/DIY'd

The only good thing about those RadioShack adapters is that they're cheap. But that cheapness affects the sound quality in a BIG way. The RadioSchmack adapters have REALLY crappy innards to begin with. The material used for the connections within those RS adapters are of a material which has relatively poor conductivity, affecting the detail and overall sound quality. You get what you pay for, in this case: At about $6.00 apiece, the RadioShack gold-plated RCA-to-mini adapter costs about half as much as the Audioquest adapter.

AudioQuest makes a 3.5mm to RCA adaptor which gives better extension on both the bass and treble ends of the spectrum and gives more translucence and depth of sound than the Radio Shack mini-to-RCA adapter. I've used both and I enjoy the sound through the AudioQuest adaptor by a fair margin. It can be had for $12.00 (about $20, with S&H) at HCM Audio http://hcmaudio.com/comp.asp?compID=777
