Little incident with my SR-300

Heard some rattling on the left side of my SR-300 with the lower frequencies. Figured I'll just open them up like in the headwize article to look for the "wrinkle in the diaphram". Thought it'd be easy enough. Well, I was wrong. I got it apart alrite, but ended up breaking the main leads. Which shouldn't be a problem soldering them back. Just that I don't see any wrinkle on the diaphragm and its hard to tell if the voice coil is broken underneath the diapragm. In order for me to verify this, I'll need to peel of the diaphragm and that's a bit scary considering how fragile it is. Any suggestions?

on another note, does any one know if the old grado cable is better than the new ones? I noticed that the sr300 cable has "Joseph Grado Signature Ultra-wide Bandwidth Reference Cable ------------> " printed on it. I don't see that on my sr325 or rs-2.

I believe that's supposed to be the better of the two cables in the older Grado headphones.

Good luck on getting things back in good shape.

Why not just contact Grado Labs and see if they can repair it?

I would assume that it would be a good investment since their not available any longer.

Thanks for the verification Jude.

Gloco,
I have sent Grado an email. I'm just a bit impatient and at the same time curious hence my actions.

so you took one of the rarest Grados in the world and broke them.

This is just as bad as the time that guy replaced the cables with those little yellow POS cables.

The horror of it all....

Damn KR... thanks for making feel so much better.

In anycase, I can put it back as it was originally. But there will still be that slight rattling noise that I'll hear if I listen carefully. And that's annoying. So until I figure what the problem is or Grado gives me some reasonable options for repair, I'll leave them in their present condition. At the moment though, I'm incline to take it to the next step and very cautiously peel of the diaphragm to have a closer examination of the voice coil conducting wires.
I've got to admit it though KR... you've made me think thrice about that next step.

Does anyone here know how the SR-300 sound compared to the current line of 325s?

Just received a reply from Grado. They will service my SR300 for a small fee if I send them back with my credit card number. That's what I will do then.

darkclouds: Just curious, does the SR300 have a small aluminum air chamber, or the large one like the SR325?
Beagle, from what I've been able to gather, the SR-300s have a plastic air chamber like the SR-100 and SR-200. I'm not clear on the size, though.

JoeLW is absolute rite. The sr300 is plastic and the chamber seems to be smaller than the sr325, but not by much.

Grado Air Chambers only come in 4 different sizes:

Special = 40

1/2 inch = 60, 80, MS-1, 100, 125, 200, 225, 300

1 inch = HP-1, HP-2, HP-3, MS-2, 325, RS-2

1 1/2 inch = MSP, RS-1

Interesting info KR... thanks

So then...

The RS-2 is nothing but a wooden SR325? For $200 more?

hmmmmmmm...

HMMMMMMMMMMM.............

KR: I thought the RS-1 chambers were the same size as the HP series, I thought the RS-1 was designed from the same spec.

The RS-1's chamber does look deeper than the HP-x's in pictures.
