I hope my cable is broken :(

OK my 1-year-old sennheiser hd590 are REALLY starting to bug me.

Sometimes the sound is extremely flat - it's like half the soundscape is missing. Sometimes there's only sound in the left ear. Other times it hisses and scratches.

It all changes when I nudge the cable around - based on the shapes I form with the cable, the sound will change - and when I find a cable position where the sound is as it's supposed to be, I use some tape to make it stay in that position.

But lately it has become increasingly difficult to find the right position...

a) Am I right assuming that it's the cable which is faulty, and not the 'phones?

b) Where can I get a replacement cable? I have tried searching eBay for "sennheiser cable", but found nothing - only some sennheiser microphones!

Help - I want my sound back :-(

It is the cable. I guarantee that. You can buy a replacement cable everywhere where they sell Seenhesier. You local shop can get it for you in a couple of days. Not very expensive.

Stefan AudioArt makes a replacement cable for the HD590. Prices are $110 thereabouts. A DIY option would probably be best if you don't want the stock cable.

if you are in US and just want same stock cable...

You sure it's the cable and not the connectors on the headphone? There were threads about connection problems and how to treat them.

The HD590 has a 3.5mm mini plug inlet right? You could make a replacement SOOOOOOOO easily, or just buy a 1/4" male to 1/8" male StarQuad 10 foot cable from Markertek. It would probably run ~$30 and beat the pants off the stock cable.

The connector for the 590 isn't a 3.5mm; it's smaller. I'm not exactly sure what the size is though.

2.5? they're readily available too. either way, sounds like a chance to cable upgrade!

Yeah, measured mine this morning. It's a 2.5mm.

Definitely a 2.5mm connector on the headphone end. The other end as standard has a 3.5mm jack and a supplied 3.5mm/9mm adaptor.

I knocked up quicky replacement which did sound better to me but it was a little to heavy. Never got round to getting another as the 2.5mm connector is so fiddly to solder.

If anyone can recommend one ready made under $50 please do so. I know Oehlbach don't do them cos I asked.
