Suggest a minisystem for around $1000 - Page 2

Well, my budget is basically $900 since the Amp is only $100. I already have a CD player. I guess with the $350 sub thrown in it's $450. The AV1 fits into that budget but I can go a little over if it's worth the extra cost. I'm not very good with woodworking so I'll probably just order the cabinet from GR if I get it.

Where can I get the kit for the speakers you have?

The AV1 is also a close call with the GR cabinet but if you get them from some other place, it can be done. And don't feel bad about not getting all premium xover parts. Many diyers, including the designer of my speakers, couldn't hear the difference between capacitors in several blind tests that have been taking place this year.

Let's put it this way. I never listen to my headphones any more. I mean that almost literally. I even sold my very nice customized wooaudio-I because I no longer listen to the headphones. The headphones do serve a purpose. If I need to blast my ears while hunting down some detail at 3am, I'll pop my headphones on for a couple minutes, but after I'm done doing that specific deed, I pop them off and continue to listen to my speakers at low level. The speakers simply offer me something I have never heard any headphones give me, and yes, I've heard the R-10, K-1000, a couple Stax, etc.

You can get the xover parts from GR (but they will then be pretty much all premium parts) and you can get the cabinets from GR too if you have extra money but there are less fancy cabinet alternatives that are cheaper.

It's the mbow1. Oh yeah, you should probably consider the caow1 if you can stretch. It's not a whole lot more. You can cut costs on the cabinet by going third party and maybe not get sonicaps and just get axons. Just keep in mind: the GR cabinets are very nice but pricey. There are cheaper alternatives if you are willing to compromise.

Ok but these $3000 monitors the guy is referring to could have been monitors that sounded like $1000 speakers so that doesnt really mean anything.

The second quote though kind of means something.

Forget that $3000 comment and just look at the dynaudio comments. That should set the bar high enough.

The Dynaudio 50 (older model than the current 52s) seem to be going for about $500 used. What do you think about that speaker? From reviews they seem to be a pretty good buy. Perhaps a tad lacking in the low end but if I eventually get a sub it will work itself out.

I've also heard some really good things about the Quad 11L and they can be had used for about that price as well. Thoughts on those? Consensus seem to be that they are better if you don't have a subwoofer.
