HD600's too "on stage w/the performers"?

I'm tired of being in the back row of the second balcony. I'm looking for more of that "downstairs in the grand foyer, buying a cup of coke at the bar during the concert" sound.

Can the HD600's be improved upon in this regard?

OK, this post actually happens to be about burn-in of ATH-W100s. I am using my Rob Zombie: "Hellbilly Deluxe" heavy metal CD (very strident, very fortissimo, just...very).
Is this the best route, or can someone suggest a better one? This would be our first night together (visually, she's a beauty...wonder how good she'll get at making love to me).

Best,
Matt

Matt, I thought you hated the HD 600 and ditched them sometime ago? Still keeping them?

Burn-in with a wide variation of music is probably a good thing. I varied classical, rock, folk, etc. As long as it had a wide range of frequencies and dynamics, instruments & vocals, etc. I set it somewhat louder than I would ordinarily use for listening.

The Lord of the Rings CD is a great choice for burn-in, IMO.

And Matt, the W100 is going to push your posting numbers up way high...

Yeah...

...they are blasting that heavy metal as we type.

Initial impressions: strident with a harsh-ish, very emphasized treble. Overall, a thinner sound, lacking heft of any serious sort.

However, they exhibit a tremendous ease of delivery overall, the likes of which I have never before heard from other cans. They feel nimble and at ease producing whatever dynamics the situation calls for.

Their ability to portray the air in a recording is tremendous and the soundstage is excellent even when compared to Grado RS-1s or Senns and they even topple my beloved MDR-W07s (no surprise, considering their size). Of course, what is most surprising about this is they are a closed can.

As far as first impressions go, I am impressed, but not utterly pleased. Of course, I am awaiting a burnt-in pair...I'll have 100 hours if I play them straight through Monday...speaking of that, do the typical burn-in times count if they are played straight, or must it be over time at relatively short intervals?

For the price, the construction is pleasing to me. It's just about where I'd expect it to be, especially considering the delicious-looking wood component and extremely well-designed adjustment arm mechanisms. No sliding adjustments here and that's a good thing! Ingenious, to say the least...

I will stick with the musical variety show bit, I just thought I'd give 'em straight hell for the first night and day.

Best,
M

I think it's funny that someone complains that the lead singer sounds like he's "on stage with the performers." If I perceived it that way I'd think the HD600 was perfect. My problem is that my brain images the singer behind the drumkit with the HD600. This is among my chief complaints with this headphone.

That whole first bit...

...was a joke.
