Are the earpiece plugs detachable?

Nat,

That was one of the hidden advantages of these cans...if you spilled your drink, you could use them to sop it up.

The cordset absolutely looks like it's detachable although I've never tried.

OneMalt and Nat,

My foggy recollection is that the 414s Y-cord terminates in a tiny male twin-plug connector on each cord and a tiny female twin-jack assembly in each earpiece. Give 'em a good wiggle-tug at the red or black plug moldings and they pop right out.

(Don't pull too hard though. Wouldn't want to tear up any solder joints if I'm brain-damaged and remembering incorrectly.)

Driftwood:

Yeah, the pics on eBay of the black D-25 did have the original Sony sticker on the coverplate, which was why I took a chance and bid.

I'm not totally thrilled to have won the auction. I probably should have played it safe and ponied up the $45 for a D-25s from Silicon Salvage. At least with them you know you'll get a working unit for sure. I figure there's a 50/50 chance that this fly-by-night "as-is" D-25 will turn out to be a $25+ doorstop.

I agree wholeheartedly about this community and the level of trust which is on this board - strange isn't it.

I have to say that this is actually one of the more busy forums out there as well - there nearly always 4 - 5 pages of new posts every day.

As for encouraging you to continually buy new kit - I must admit I have taken a retro-step here and started favouring MP3 and MD playback over CD - more for convenience sake but a well encoded MP3 sounds bloody brilliant on the SlimX.

Apart from things like replacement filters for my Ety's - I honestly don't think I will be buying anything else for a while now - on the other hand there is this rather nice second hand...............! (for the love of God - help me!)

Question, do you have an amp for the Sennheiser HD580 yet? If not, I highly suggest you invest in one prior to getting anything else. JMT CHA-47's a great starting point. I started with a Creek OBH-11SE, then moved to a cheaper tubed amp - Antique Sound Lab MG Head DT, which I'm using at the moment. But I'll be skipping many steps to top of the line soon.

I see possibilities for this. Stefan AudioArt, make us an HD414 replacement cable! You have...two prospective customers here. No, wait—make that one.

Holy cow! Tight bass, detailed mids, and the highs are sweet. That onstage thing as opposed to being in the audience is really true. And to get an SR-80/125 hybrid for 99 bucks shipped was certainly pleasing. Suddenly my Koss earclips seemed muddier (and more like the $35 portable phones they are), and my Sony V-6s sounded less "analytical" and more just plain crude. The debate about open versus closed phones came to life here. Very interesting.
Wow, your descriptions about the grado sound really intrigued me once again. Each time after reading a fellow who enjoyed their grado, it always keeps me wonder how they actually sound. Will you by any chance be selling the Alessandro MS-1's in the near future? Because I will certainly be interested.

Oh, you mentioned that you purchased your sennheiser from ubid, but I can't find any on ubid at the moment. I always keep an eye out maybe I can catch a good deal if I get lucky.

You did a very nice review on your equipments and I enjoyed reading it a lot.

No, I haven't popped for a dedicated amp yet---but now that my "can collection" has peaked out, that'll be next. My thoughts are right in line with yours, that the logical, common-sense way to go is to order a JMT cha47 (presumably with the gain kicked up to 8 to match the Senn 580s, although I don't know what effect that would have on the more efficient Philips and Alessandros).

Anyway, that'll be something to look forward to in the next month or two.

Another Minnesotan! Cool!

Welcome to the fray.

I feel your pain...

12 months ago I was a happy listener of my yellow-padded HD-40 Senns plugged into the CD drive of my office computer. But now...

SR-80's -> SR-325's -> HP-1's

About 5 or 6 DIY amps that get progressively more complicated (in parts count) but much better sounding.

A DS-25s, a Markertek Cable, A regulated +/- 18V power supply on the work bench...

Will it ever end? Probably when the money goes away!

Run while you still can!!

ok,

Hehe. Truer words were never spoken....

I started off with what I thought at the time was hi-end stuff from the local high-end stereo shop, Grado SR-325's and a Creek OBH11se. All was fine until I found these forums. I now have a Wheatfield Audio tube amp that needs to be fed, a pair of Senn HD600's with Clou Blue cables, and a set of Sony CD3000's.

God help me, I'm still eyeing those Audio Technica ATH-W100's, when I know, deep down inside, I don't really *need* anymore cans, but it seems more and more like the *want* is gonna end up outweighing the *need*.

Autumnal, Good post BTW.

Logistically speaking, you never "need" anything. Everything that a person wants or "needs" is based on self-indulging desire, not necessity. Hell, even life is an option, a want, not a need. Yet here we are, talking about obsessively "needing" new headphones every other week. Why can't we all just keep our priorities in perspective?

Oh, yeah, pepsione1, that IS one damn nice avatar.
