ME - los or MEL - os?

When I bought one of my Melos', the former owner kept referring to it as the "MEL-os" as in the man's name "Mel" with an "os" (long o, soft s) on the end.

I questioned him about pronuciation, because I always thought it was ME-los, as in "me" myself and I with an "os" on the end (long o, soft s). He said the shop where he got it pronouced it "MEL-os".

Any ideas how to pronounce "Melos"?

I believe "melos" is the Greek word for "song". I don't speak Greek, but the Greek isle of Melos/Mylos, presumably named after the word for song, is pronounced ME' los.

You mean MAY-los? But that's not even a choice!

And how do we know the s is soft? What if it's May-loz?

I could really care less how it is pronounced as long as it's not My-Loss

If we ever need to get them repaired, we may pronounce it May-lox

A dealer near me who used to carry the line pronounces it mell' oss. Good enough for me

Err, the apostrophe just means emphasis -- it's not one of those french accents. Think ME los.

I was curious about this too. I was leaning toward ME-los, but whaddo I know?

I've always thought it was MEL-os, kind of like melody

Mail-os (soft "ai," long "o," short "s")

At least that's how my seller pronounced it...
Now we're really confused.

Whatever it is, it sounds more exotic than Me-los.

Should someone just e-mail Melos Audio Restoration and just ask?

This reminds me of people dicussing the Grado pronunciation. (I always thought it was Grah-do, but it's Gray-do.)

It's not short for Marsh-melos?

Melos is ancient Greek and means song or - the plot thickens - melody.

Exchange the "dy" in melody for an "s" and you're there. Both vowels are short, with stress on the first syllable.

Ancient Greek dictionary - I knew it would come in handy, eventually.

Until it breaks down, then its "OOOOHHH SH!T" or maybe something a little stronger since there is only really one place that knows much about fixing the meli. hoho.
