Overview:
The Beats Pro is the Beats' top-of-the-line model, with a lofty price tag of $400. However, its price, along with Beats' reputation with being a hated-on brand, hides the fact that...
I got these straight from Japan via Tenso right as Dsnuts got the hype train rolling last fall. Bought 3 pairs, of which I gave one to a colleague (yes, they are so inexpensive you can just give...
Reposting my original review from Amazon.com - these headphones are just too good to be left in the dustbin of history - for instance, I just bought a pair of Monoprice MEP-933, listed everywhere...
Somehow, the Ballad of Jed Clampett comes to mind, as I start to write this. You know, the Beverly Hillbillies. He was living his life, struck gold, and everything changed. That's kind of what...
I realized today that if I REALLY want to go all-out on my analog rig, I'm going to want a tubed phono stage. How cheaply can I get one (or, better stated, how cheaply can I get a decent one)?
So, ten months later... how's it going and which road did you take?
don't belong in the same sentence. This is really one area where you get what you put into it and really needs loot thrown at it even if DIY.
An option would be a discrete JFET stage which would cost far less
This has been my experience, too. A phono stage might be a fun way to introduce some tubes into your system, but the gain involved tends to introduce some noise. If you are on the cheap, I'd recommend SS phono stage and tubiness from your head-amp!
I just hooked the bellari up last night and boy did it sound good. It made a difference hearing it coupled to my conrad johnson preamp. I do recommend this item for the money however I must confess I don't know how a single tube can drive dual channels?
There is a lot of discussion of 12AX7 in the archives here because the tube was used in the ASL MG Head, which used to be a very popular amp around here in olden times.
It sounds fine with head sets however it is really surprising to hear my LP's after all these years through a tube preamp (conrad johnson) and the little Bellari..
Well now that I know that the 12ax7 is a twin triode now I can understand how it can feed both channels. Many thanks on that one.
I have always been envious of people who build their own Hagerman Technology Cornet 2 Phono preamplifiers. Jim Hagerman's vacuum tube designs tend to be dead quiet and feature none of that tubiness sound people come to expect in lesser gear. I have a Bugle which is amazing in it's own right. A Cornet 3 is said to be in the works but if and when it actually arrives is anyone's guess.

hey i just bought an old Dynaco Dynakit PAS-2 that takes the 12ax7 and i need to buy some tubes for it, do you know which tubes sound closest to telefunks? the cheapest i found them was 60-70 and thats too high for me, but i noticed there are many other affordaboe 12ax7 tubes? and what rectifier tube would you reccomend? thanks
