Recommendations for sub $1000 speakers? - Page 4

Get the rotel, use the passive pre with it for the time being. Save up and get something better down the road. That would be a plan I could live with.

Scott did multiple reviews comparing all the monitor speakers to the Dyn Audio 42. Just check out the review and you'll see the other speakers he included in the test. He also used a hybrid amp from Response Audio in Endicott, New York. Bill Baker and his wife run the operation with a satellite showroom in Chicago. Bill is great to talk to, wonderful to buy from and he also modifies speakers along with tube amps.

I heard a set of these at Rocky Mountain Audio Fest and they were amazing. The imaging was very accurrate and they created a huge soundstage. The bass was deep and tight and overall the speakers sounded much larger than they actually were. If speakers were practical for me and I had the money I'd get these. Heck, those speakers would give me a good reason to try to make my room practical for a speaker system. Odyssey was demoing the speakers as part of a system that they sell for $1500 that includes the speakers, a passive preamp, a power amp, and all the cables to connect the stuff together.

I have a pair of Von Schweikert VR1 reference monitors and am very happy with them. They go for around $900 new and get a good rap on audioasylum. The sound is very open, dynamics are crisp and soundstage is huge. They are also very linear (down to 70Hz anyway - and even then they fall off linearly!) and even come with a printout of their individually tested frequency response! Add to that the fact they are very sensitive (around 90dB - so can even use them with tube/low power amps if you ever want to go that way!) and have a nice finish to boot and you've got a pretty strong contender IMO.
