In my quest to get some better sound on my computer I got: a Sony MDR-v6 haven't got it yet though, I also just got a Av-710 for my computer for use with these phones.

how much would I benefit from a CMoy stlye DIY amp or will it not make much of a difference with these phones and soundcard.

also i'm not all that good with a soldering iron I might be able to bribe my roommate with beer to get him to help me but was woundering if anyone would build me an amp a basic but solid CMoy type or simlar amp.

i dont think u'd get that much of an improvement. I think you're fine without an amp.

A few suggestions for amps the benefits of which would be worth their cost are: 1) cmoy - send an email to ivan@eyevancsu.net identifying yourself as a Head-Fier and ask for a quote on a cmoy and 2) Go-Vibe - check it out on www.headsave.com. For $65, this amp gives substantially better sound quality than a cmoy. Even more modest setups than yours do benefit from either of these amps, which can be had for sufficiently low prices that there's no need for proficiency with a soldering iron.

I just tried that combinatin. There is a small difference between using the cmoy and without it, but it would be a matter of individual taste as far as which you prefer. I tried a cmoy with the JRC4556 opamp and it increased the bass and generally gave a warmer tone, which I prefer with the V6s, but there's some loss of detail compared to running unampd from the 710.

How about with with a pair of HD-570's? because that is what I have. :P I am going to buy the chaintech card today; it's on sale at my local computer store for 30 dollars canadian.

I actually have a built cMoy but it's not working. I need to troubleshoot it.

I just finished my cMoy today and hooked it up to my new AV-710 and HD-570s and wow. It was a HUGE difference. I can't speak for your sony's though sorry But I love the music from my computer again

Adding amps do improve the sound, but it isn't really practical for V6 & for your current setup. You can actually combine the price of V6 and a portable amp to get Audio Technica ATH-A500 (noticeably accurate sounding headphone than V6).
