and besides, isn't 'punk' pretty much passe now as a marketing strategy? they've been flogging that since Green Day blew up. and Green Day blew up a good 10 years ago.
I don't think that Head-Fi members make up the demographic that the record industry is trying to fool with Avril Lavigne. I think that would be the 10-15 year old group that is home at 3pm to watch TRL. And they are very easy to fool

Just my honest opinion, but as a big fan of NOFX, I think Punk in Drublic was their best album by far.

Rancid: Indestructible was imho their best album

Good call on Siouxsie and The Damned! Haven't spent much time with the others though, so I'll take your word for it

to be honest, Siouxsie and the Banshees really only had two punk rock albums, and The Scream is by far the better. it's one of those albums that prove punk rock can evolve, and could be dramatic, varied, and provocative. from start to end, the album goes through moods, tempos, and aggression without losing the scope of punk rock. i love this album, and i think it's a punk rock must have. i think i'll go listen to Mittageisen now.

i swear by their 1st 2 albums, and maybe the self-titled in 2000, but Indestructible didn't impress me all that much. and that video with the dancing girls ....

I Scream Records has a couple of Oi! tribute comp albums featuring modern day US/Euro bands like Agnostic Front, Tech-9, Discipline etc redoing their Oi! faves. worth looking into if you like the original material but thought that the poor recordings took away much of their punch.

No question -- Clash self-titled debut -- both the US and UK version are great.

The only other serious contender is Sex Pistols "Never Mind..." I don't consider London Calling to be punk. Same for Television, Jam, etc. All great music, though.

1. The Clash UK version
2. Sex Pistols- Never Mind the Bollocks
3. The Ramones-The Ramones
4. Patti Smith- Horses

I can't believe this hasn't been mentioned yet:

How the hell did I forget Horses??!!?? I saw Patti this summer in Chicago and she could still kick the crap out of singers half her age.

"Jesus died for somebody's sins but not mine" is the 70's equivalent of "Hope I die before I get old"...

Thanks for reminding me sno1man!

I always get a kick out of seeing that one. The drummer, Jeff Nelson, worked at the drug store down the block from where I grew up in DC. Real friendly guy as I remember.

Forget the remakes or tribute albums........you can easily buy the original albums or convient Best Of/Singles collections. I find most of the modern covers pale imitations of the originals anyway. Britsh CD labels like:
Captain Oi
Cherry Red
Anagram
Have most of the classic British Oi bands available on CD. As fas as sound quality when has real punk music ever had great sound?

As I mentioned in my first post here there are some very good authentic revival punk groups in the 1990's like Rancid..........but go back and search out the original bands who started it all, they are the real deal and have not been surpassed IMO.

Glad to see many people giving respect to righteous Clash s/t album (I was starting to get worried with all the London Calling responses early on)

London Calling is an equally great album but it goes beyond punk since it is so diverse.

"Lost in the supermarket" has probably the greatest most concise line about being an unwanted child. "I wasn't born so much as I fell out"

But alas thats' another topic.

Maybe I getting old, but I cannot believe that no one has mentioned the Velvet Underground. Man these guys opened the doors for the Ramones, the New York Dolls, etc. In any case, here is my list.

1. Velvet Underground - Velvet Underground
2. Never Mind the Bullocks - Sex Pistols
3. The Clash - The Clash

I feel that this is the foundation of punk. From there the number of equally great albums is very high, i.e. the Ramones, Black Flag's Damaged, Fishbone, Husker Du's Zen Arcade, etc.
