Where to buy ALPS pots and FRED diodes?

I am modifying my MG Head amp, and would like to know where to buy an ALPS non-stepped 100K stereo pot. The problem is it has to be small (about 18mmX18mm).

Also, I would like to know where to buy fast recovery diodes (FREDs).

You can find Alps pots here, but they're a little bigger than you'd like (25mm x 25mm):

The Radio Shack 100K stereo pot is made by Alps and is smaller. Grado uses it for their RA-1, so it's a reasonably good pot.

I think someone said that while the Grado RA-1 and Radio Shack Alps pots may look the same, they're actually not - that the RA-1's pot may be made better. I think there was a short mention of the difference in the thread(s) where the RA-1 was disected.

You can find FREDs at places like www.digikey.com (where I got mine). They have a pretty fair selection of FREDs and other diodes.

I dunno. I read the RA-1 DIY threads pretty carefully (I'm in the process of building an RA-1 clone in a rosewood cigar humidor), and I didn't read anything about the pots being different. But I suppose it's possible. They look the same.

If he's modifying his MG Head to upgrade it, then getting the Radio Shack Alps pot might be a step down from what's already in the MG Head. He should look for the kind of Alps pot Jan Meier uses in the Porta Corda (some other pots available at that size are from Clarostat, which Headroom uses in their Cosmic amps, and Noble).

I would like to replace the pot I have with the same or better quality. It can be no larger than about 18mmX18mm.

Which Radio Shack pot is the Alps 100K? The only audio taper stereo 100K pot I can find there is the 271-1732.

Does anyone have experience with this pot -- is it bad, or just not audiophile-grade?

Thanks,

I found a little section in the Stereophile archives with a small comparison of the Radio Shack Alps pot versus the more expensive high grade pots, such as the Alps Black Beauty that the reviewer is raving about, which apparently was used in the Joe Grado's HPA-1DC (might be just HPA-1, article says the other) headphone amp. Interestingly, Grado went from the old HPA-1's using a nice ~$30 pot (probably somewhat less when bought in large quantities) to the Radio Shack ~$2 pot for the RA-1.
