Cans for a friend and I'm clueless

Just when I thought I knew everything I needed to know about headphones, a friend tells me he wants some good headphones for .. around 100 Euro for unamped use in a student dorm. He has a VERY large CD collection (more than I can count, his whole room is just a large CD storage) of ALL kinds of music (from badly recorded strange progressive 70s stuff to modern italo metal and triphop .. well, just everything )...
Now instantly some headphones came to mind:

Alessandro MS-1: Famous for unamped use, but maybe too restricted in genres for his broad taste in music. Also maybe not durable enough and leak too much sound for dorm use.
ATH A500: Never heard em, but supposedly good unamped all-rounders... but I'd rather not suggest headphones I never heard
Beyer DT440: Close in sound to my precious, but not as durable. And he's gonna use them alot, and for a long time.
Senn HD555: What about those? lini thought they sounded inferior to the DT440, but they might be more durable... only heard them very briefly once and wasn't terribly impressed

Long story short, I'm clueless. There seems to be no perfect headphone for him, except maybe the A500 which I haven't heard...
Maybe one of you can help with that decision

thanks

Unless he's a bass head the DT440 would probably his best option. Mine makes everything sound good so he won't have to worry (too much) about bad recordings and it sounds fine unamped from my PCDP's headphone jack.

I'd suggest the A500s as good all-round cans, if they're anything like the A900s, and from what i've read they are.

Thanks for your replies, but ... isn't there someone who heard both the A500 and the DT440 or DT531 (since they're similar)?
I'd really like to hear a comparison between those two, but they seem to be in different isolated worlds

I searched around a bit to find any comparisons or people who own/owned both and found NONE.
Oh well, I thought, and told my friend to order A500s as they're pretty cheap from bluetin.com
I'll be the first one to hear both (If he lets me, that is )
Let's see how this turns out
