Melos SHA-1 arrival - Page 4

There's a button the SHA-Gold/Maestro remote labelled "mute". So, you'd think you'd press that button to take it out of "mute". But NOOOO, it's the red POWER button, dummy! I panicked and called the seller of my original Gold to ask what the deal was, thinking it was broken (broken Melos!!! NO!!!!!) , and he had to explain the stupidity of the procedure.

ANd no, the POWER button has no real function at all, as the power cannot be turned on/off remotely!

To top it off, the Melos remote and my Sony WEGA TV share the exact same controls as Melos. When I raise Melos volume, it raises the TV volume.

If the damn thing didn't sound so good, it would be hard to overlook the "quirks" of these units. I should add that my new Maestro, as upgraded by MAR has a change to the circuit that automatically takes it out of "mute" after warm-up.

The RKV sounded extremely big and tubey and rolled off somewhat on the top end. Probably good to some, not to me. They sounded darker than i remembered them, dark like they had been with the creek OBH-11. It wasnt bad, but i feel that the Melos has a more complimentary signature for the HD600's. I dunno, maybe i am not making a good judgement on the brief listening period I had with the RKV. But thats what I remember.

After literally spending a whole day with the RKV, I can say that it left me seriously considering buying an HD600. It's a moot point now, what with it residing way up yonder in Lone Star country--but damn, that's a sweet amp! Don't be coy, let's see a review.

Bass
How does the bass sound with the 600/Melos?

Heh, heh, Markl. My SHA is still in the box but I removed the remote & pressed the power button just to see if there were batteries in there. My TV (Sony) powered up - & my back was to it. This is not a good thing. Anytime I need to de-mute the Melos my TV is going to go on? Sheesh......

Procedure with SHA-1 is somewhat simpler. Turn on (red LED). Wait. When LED turns green, turn on source. Listen.

The SHA-1 is my amp of choice with the HD-600. The two just seem to fit together perfectly. Then again, there are many that I just haven't heard...(Dusty, I WANT to hear that RKV!)

Pigmode, the SHA-1 controls the bass on the HD-600 better than anything else I've heard. It's tight, deep, and there's a lot of it.

I don't know how they'll sound with the new Cardas cable, but the Clous made the Senns a whole lot more detailed (hard to believe). Violins finally got their proper texture with it... unfortunately, the clous disrupt the sublime tonal balance, ruin the soundstage, and give me a headache...

The Cardas cables are probably much, much better.
