I won't be able to answer your question, but hopefully someone will chime in. I've been meaning to buy a gagaku recording. I had the opportunity to play the instrument hichiriki (not sure of the spelling) with the gagaku orchestra at U.C.L.A. while a student.

That was a long time ago and was looking for something to rekindle my memories.

My teacher was something like the Chinese martial arts instructor in Kill Bill II. When I first walked into the class, he handed me some sheet music in Japanese notations and said, "You sing." He'd always say, "Play with your soul."

Loved him and the class.
