New Headphone + amp = Dillemma or Equation?

So...

Amp? Of course I'll get an amp... eventually... Let's just say I have 200 buckaroos right now. (ha!)

Dunno if it's a dillemma.. More of an equation i guess:

The amp should work well with my DT250 (80ohm)'s. But that's not all, oh no. Since I BET I will buy another pair of headphones after I buy the amp, it should also work well with that headphone. So what headphone will I get ?? Hmm.. I'm thinking, "HD580" or "HD590"... Another serious contender: "HP910"..

Okay, I've got the "A"(my beyers) and the possible "B's" (future options) ... So how do I find the "C"(amp)??

Well... lets'see:

A + C = A + better sound
B + C = Sound that'll blow me away

B = ??
C = ??

Anyone figured it out yet?

I would be careful about purchasing the HP910 since it costs more than the HP890 and has received less than splendid reviews from more than one person. In fact, I don't think it shares anything at all with the HP840 and HP890 breed of Philips headphones.

The 910 I can try in a shop - the 890 I can't.....

I"m one of those people that after reading Jan's comments on the Philips headphones bought the HP910 over the HP890. Don't know bout anyone else.........but I found them very solid, decent headphones.

Used them for awhile thru JMT CHA 47 - altoid amp. Sound great with or without the amp.

If I were you though........I'd get the HD600. Definitely worth the extra moola. I recently bought the hd600 - in a whole different class.........compared to the hp910s.

Very nice piece of infomation jodo - What amp should I get? Do you think a portable one like the Porta Corda would really power the HD600??

Buy A Meier Audio Corda or Porta Corda amp, and Jan will give you a discount on headphones purchased at the same time

Haven't tried the combo myself, but from what I"ve read - the answer is a very LOUD NO.

Only good comments I've read about the HD600 and a amp that's relatively portable is the Grado R-1.

I"m buying the MG Head OTL myself.............
........course on the other hand JMT's CHA 47 /w 2 9V batteries are supposed to do a relatively decent job of powering the hd 600s as well.

Hmm... Well, then I might get the Corda HA-1 afterall... It's suppose to sound great and, you know, I'm all about value. Sad thing is: Corda HA-1 + HD580 means I'll have add about 3 months to my moneypiling thingy... I'm thinking HA-1 mainly cuz of the value and the transportability. Is the HD600 worth the extra dough? (in your oppinion)?

BTW, I have ordered the Porta Corda HD600 combo myself. They should arrive in about a week so I will post a verdict then

The Porta Corda can be powered by a plug in power supply as well as battery power so powering the HD600's shouldn't be a problem. I'm sure Jan Meier will be happy to provide more information if you email him.

Very much so.

A JMT and a 600 actually sounds excellent (just tell JMT that you will be using 580s or 600s with it...). And the value is phenomenal.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that option Oldguy (no offense - it's your name )

Then perhaps I'll get the Porta anyways? But then I'll probably end up getting a bigger amp later... So should I just skip the portable link? AARRgh!! Keep the oppinions rollin' ppl.. I'm looking forward to your review/thoughts on the combo Oldguy

Don't know about the Corda's except they get good reviews.

I've got HD600's and a Total Airhead. I'm sure that a fancier, more expensive amp would do a "better" job. However, I've been absolutely blown away by the combination, however I've used it. From laptop, from pcdp, from pcp, from line out from H-K FL8300 cdp.

So, based on my experience, I'd say the Corda's, which are supposed to be as good as the TA should drive HD600's well.

Of course, my pcdp and pcp both seem to be fairly high output and drive the 600's nicely alone. The TA just adds a little something. Sort of what some describe as "air" around the music, around the instruments. Very satisfying, as I don't try to get wrapped in the equipment, but in the music.

Some will disagree, but you can't go wrong with HD600's and they are better than HD580's.

Follow the same route that many of the newbies are taking, Sennheiser HD600 & ASL MG Head OTL. Can't go wrong. =) Oh and source is pretty damn important, I regard it as more important than the amp.

The Corda HA-1 is a very nice and IMO, one of the better values out there. Aside from its transportability, it's also very versatile--does its job well with the HD600, Etymotics, whatever. The 120ohm jack may seem like a gimmick but that consider that a freebie with an otherwise solid versatile amp with the crossfeed feature as a bonus.

I have a feeling I'm going to be trying out a few different higher end amps for home use before settling on one but I'm glad to have the Corda around as a reference.
