Well let's put it this way. Grados are known as the most open can to date - well, that's their reputation. With these MS-2s on with normal listening levels, I can still hear the TV if it's on, the baby crying in the crib in the bedroom (a good thing) etc etc. Most audiophiles would agree that these aren't ideal listening conditions.

The 010 is MORE open than that. Yep. The most open cans Evar. It's like you don't ever have any attenuation going on at all. Again, not a problem when you live in a monastery, but bothersome if you have a constant whine from your desktop, or a rumbly ac, etc etc.

I've owned grado rs-1, alot of senneheisers and stax headphones, but they are equally open to me. especially the grado rs-1 is NOT more open then a hd650 or stax headphone for instance.

If you wanna "listen" to music, you should be able to find a quit spot and really enjoy the music.

K1000 is still more open than 010

I don't see openness an issue unless you are easily disturbed by outside sounds. Everybody has a different threshold for that.

This is NYC, there IS no quiet spot

All joking aside, I agree with lan - it depends on your threshold for outside noise annoyance/disturbance. If I really like a track I'll just jack it up and enjoy the track and kill the long-term health of my ears for a few minutes for some headbanging - but hopefully the DT770s will be good for when it's just too darn loud - the wife is making a fruitshake, dog barking at the puppy next door, etc.

Not at even 12-1 o'clock at night?

Exactly, senns are as open as grados, if not more and lots of people use those. And let us not forget that speakers are pretty open too, and most people use those.

I think Jahn needs some etys

12-1am is prime time for the bikers to scream down the highway - plus earlier in the year the construction started about then. plus there's always police, firetrucks, ambulances, screeching tires, barking dogs, etc etc etc - it's the city that never sleeps. plus my sister is helping babysit right now and she has to get her dose of adult swim on the tv next to the computer. different strokes for different folks, man.

and i tried my friend's ety ER4ps - i'm just not a big fan of the IEM, it freaks me out. preference thing. but that's neither here nor there, I love my grados, as i'm sure senn lovers love their cans, and i can live with it for the most part. but getting an open can for a few hundred is a big diff from buying a 010 - if i spent thousands on a can i would REQUIRE SILENCE *raises arms dramatically like a conductor*

The thickness of the walls (stones) of my old house is around 50 cm !!! (or more). My house is in a no traffic place (historcal centre of the city), so no any car aorund my place...

I am now officially jealous.

But 32 degrees C in the summer. I would never be able to handle that.
I keep my computer room at work at 18C.

Other than IEM's, the K1000's are unbeatable for hot summer weather.

I've been using my K1000's alot lately due to a heat wave.

Senns are semi-open. Grados are truly open.

Oh and about speakers - if i had a pair, and had them jacked up to the levels that i have my MS-2s jacked up to occassionally, there would be complaints from the neighbors - the drywall here is pretty thin, argh. I mean, i wake up in the morning to the neighbor's alarm clock. there are all sorts of reasons why we've made our gear choices, and ancilliary circumstances is one of them - and an important one.
