So an amplifier whose first 16, maybe 32mW (115dB) is clean and linear should drive the Qualias well. If, as KG says you need 10dB headroom to do this, that would mean being able to drive the cans easily to, say 125 dB,meaning roughly3 more doublings of the power, equaling 256 mW. So a 500mW amp seems quite adequate. I bet there are many that can do that, even into an impedance of 70 ohms. Does it really take a monster amplifier? The calculations you gave seem to say not. Of course, there might be unfavorable phase angles at certain frequencies, like speakers.

What is all this discussion about needing huge power supplies, etc.?

I can understand wanting a very good quality amp for a great set of cans, but power quantity is not the real issue, is it?

Just two amp designers with different view of design.

As I said the RP5 cav is driving the Qualia extremely good, but this can is too much sensitive fo rthe gain o fthis amp (as the CD 3000). The new RP010 will be better even this aspect.

Tomorrow I'll tell you my first impressions. I'll meet Rudi for the first time, and he has a very good digital camera, so see you tomorrow.

I believe that Dr. Rudi knows very well his work and he has done the best amp (at the moment) for the Qualia 010.

At my point of vision, the first thing for this can is to have an amp that sound very, very neutral. The RP5 cav is more neutral respect to the Egmont listened with the Omega so, I have all reasons to believe that the RP010 will be even better. I'll tell you tomorrow.

Best!

yes Nik,

that's what i stated at some posts in this thread that it is very important to have the "whole" setup very neutral because the Qualia is so revealing.

Have fun tomorrow!

One more consideration about the Qualia.

I said that on of the most important thing was the position of the can in your head (yes it is), but now I can see that even changing the headphones in my head the sound do not change a lot as I saw during my first listenings tests. So my conlcusion is that the MOST IMPORTANT thing of this advanced object is the BURN-IN, yes I think the first point that MUST be considered. Probably the new kinds of materials used in building the driver of the can need a lot of time to be ready for the best performance, I believe this. I do not know if something about this is wrote in the owner manual because only japanese...

Now the direct comparison with me Omega/Egmont setup is very clear: the Qualia is a Hi Definition headphones, I can say the first 4D headphones as the Linn Sondek CD 12 (as I read in the owner manual, is a 4D player).

Best!

Nik, can you please tell us if there is a way of adjusting the headphone in size any way(like hd650, etc) to fit on your head or is it just one size for your fit only? I really can't see that quite clearly on the pics of the qualia from sony.
If so, no-one is actually be able to use the sony store qualia since it is one fit only and the right fit seems crucial.

It is not adjustable. At the Qualia store they have all three sizes tho, and the medium fit most of us perfectly - I think the small was a good fit for Jpelg. The large was huge for everyone. But no, microadjustments were not possible on the fly with these cans. If you buy one, they'll give you a custom fitter as Nik described before so your cans will fit you.

thanks for your reply.

so, most people will fit the medium size. otherwise you would have a huge problem if someone else wanted to listen to te headphone.

There is just one adjustment you can do on the Qualia (for all the sizes of the headband): the headband is mounted on the pads with two screws for side and you can adjust it for a more up or dawn position and the little write (the blue one left and the red one right) will be "open" or "closed", a bit hard for me to explain. Tomorrow with the Rudi's camera I'll post some pics about this.

According to the manual, the D-33, D-34 puts out just 5mW per channel @ 16 Ohms, and honestly they drive the CD3000 to a very high levels (32 Ohms) more than enough for me and the sound is very good also...

Hmm so the headband IS adjustable a bit - just have to unscrew some things...which they'll probably do for you before you get them, if you've sent them the correct head measurements.

the removable cable is VERY intriguing - how long until Larry DIYs a non-microphonic cable?

Thanks Guru!

Who can translate ?

I can do the same for the other pages of the owner manual if someone translate, there are pics of the driver also...

My Qualia 010 was setted with the headband (size S) in the up position directly from Sony and fit perfectly.

Best!
