Am I the first owner ??? Qualia 010 !!! - Page 24

Thread Starter
As you know my test of the Qualia is with the RP5 cav and I think this system "better" than my Omega/Egmont, better in the sense of neutrality and fidelity to a life-like sound (I did not told which of the two I PREFER that is another thing...). Well, I think that the new RP010 will be surely even a little better than the RP5 cav. If you have a idea of another amp that could be better matched with the Qualia tell me please, thanks!

Best!
Nicola

Kevin, I agree with you on this point - I believe we have yet to hear the 010 through an amp that does it justice. We're giving it another try at the Qualia store on the 26th and we're bringing some other amps in the hope that one will drive the 010 the way it deserves. Check the meet thread for that, and if you have any suggestions on a currently existing amp that might do the trick, let us know and if we can get it there on the 26th we'll do what we can to bring one and do a comparo for head-fi.

Kevin -

Your 10:15am post today is a good one. As Jahn said, please take a look at the latest updates on our new scheduled attempt at the nyc Qualia room. It's been my (most severely headfi inexperienced) feeling that there is a serious underestimation of the challenges posed by these phones. I hope we're not spinning our gears on a wrong track. In addition to bozebuttons Cary300SEI/Meitner setup (& maybe a melos), Mikhail is providing one of his amps with a selection of tubes, but I don't know which Supra and tubes, and what specs.

Any thoughts?

I think a reviewer mentionned Sony used that Luxman headamp Audiocubes carries to demonstrate the new 010. It's a powerful amp (1W at 32ohm) but a search here doesn't turn any useful info about how it sounds.

low power, some amplifiers have their best distortion specs right before

The qualia headphones are certainly not ultra high efficiency headphones.
They really do need significant amounts of power to sound their best.

Rudi is in good company with another famous designer who obfuscates
his numbers too. Take a look in the october stereophile where the
halcro spec says 3000 parts per billion of distortion. And the real
stereophile numbers are .025%. A stereophile review of the rp-010 would
definitely be good reading.

Many people who listen to these headphones will do so with amplifiers
that do not have the capability to drive these headphones correctly and
will walk away with the wrong impression. These are not 300 ohm headphones
that are easy to drive. They also have significantly more inductance than
you might expect. Even sony has not decided how best to drive their
headphones.

There is more to designing an amplifier to a specific job than saying
you have done so and putting a "Hic Sunt Leones" on it.
Dear Mr. Gilmore;

why don't you design an amp that takes full advantage of the Qualia then?
commenting on others work is easy.
at least Rudi has made the first amp to pare with the qualia, yet you burn it down allready. Even when little to nothing is known about the sound quality.
you of all people should know that specs are not the holy grail.

please give us a detailed list of things could have been done better.
Since you are the expert on this subject. Enlighten us.

I know for one thing that the alps pots are not the best around. i would have loved to see at least a noble or stepped pot in there. I give you guys that one.

uh oh that's sorta a flame bait post above - let's keep it clean folks.

I did. It is called the dynahi. Many people are building them now. A few
are finished. It was specifically designed for these headphones when i
first found out about them more than a year ago. It will put out
20 volts rms into 70 ohms which gives about 3db of headroom. It can output
5 watts of pure class A power into 70 ohms.

It has a thd of better than .002% at rated power.
DC to 100khz absolutely flat. -3db at 1mhz.
s/n of better than 100db.

Nope, specs are not everything. They are however a good place to start.

Ditto Jahn again.

No flaming - PLEASE.

This is one of the most dynamic and topically important threads I've seen so far, and intelligent adult discourse is what will serve everyone best. Please drop the childish impulses to throw out sarcasm and venom, and leave the egos in the trash.

KEVIN -- is there a possibility that you might take up the challenge to develop a system that will support the promise of the 010? (I expect it's not a small matter to commit to developing any top-end product.)

well, he's kinda burning the amp down to the ground even he never heard it.
i think some statements he made about the new Rudi amp could have been a little more subtle. Even the new owner, Nik, haven't heard the amp yet but some people allready know it isn't nearly good enough. Give it at least some credit till more about soundquality is known.

no, it is NOT initally a flame bait! If he can make a better amp, please do so and give the new qualia owners what they deserve. The best amp out there.

I'm looking forward to listening to one of the Dynahis at the NYC Fall meet for sure! Someone will have tamed the 010 by then, I'm certain.

You see,

Mr. Gilmore and I can discuss this matter in a very mature way.
I just thought since he was speaking of a "colleague" maybe he could have been a little more subtle, that's all.(maybe he allready was kind of selling his new Dynahi amp in a way)

I will never discuss his abilities as a designer, i know he is a well respected and prominent headphone amp designer!

reading the specs, this new amp looks very promising.
but in the end, all that matters is how good the amps will sound with the qualia. whether it is a Rudi amp or a Mr. Gilmore amp.
Let's say i respect both for making amps and make enjoying music such fun.
