Am I the first owner ??? Qualia 010 !!! - Page 11

Mastergill-
I understand your enthusiasm for such a wonderful setup such as yours and I am sorry if I came off as somewhat rude. It's just that the answer some people give sometimes (a lot of the time) to questions regarding the 650's shortcomings (relative to ones own opinion) seem to always involve..."buy some sort of multi-thousand dollar setup." Spending uber amounts of money and throwing it at an already great headphone is not always the answer. And some people take away what's good about this headphone when making such recommendations...meaning they concentrate on the slight negatives as opposed to concentrating on the massive amounts of positives. But I understand what you're saying now in a more specific way. Hell, I too would be jumping for joy and wanting to tell everyone how great my system is and sounds if I had the same setup as you have. What you have is something most people could only wish for in their lifetime. So I'm happy that your 650's shine so brightly. They truely and honestly in my mind are magical headphones, period! I can't even come to imagine what they would sound like, especially compared to a rig like mine. I love using my Rega Planet2000 with them, and even then I can barely fathom about how they can get THAT much better...but I guess they can and obviously are THAT much better!! After going to a meet yesterday and hearing all the other brands of high end headphones (Sony, AT, Stax, Grado), Sennheiser is still, by a gigantic margin, my all time favorite sounding type of headphones with their specific sound signature that just pulls you in with its warmth, punch, and ubber detail/sparkle. In my mind, nothing beats a 650 hooked up to top notch gear like NielPearts Benchmark DAC1!!! I'm willing to bet that his DAC could rival your source easily, but that's another discussion!!!

Just make sure that next time you try to think of other alternatives to fixing (or giving simple suggestions/solutions/reasons) the shortcomings of the 650's than to rather suggest throwing thousands of dollars at the problem, which will ultimately, magically take away the negative aspects. Also remember that the 650's type of sound simply isn't for everybody and a lot of people just don't really like the Senn type sound. I know it's odd, but it's true. However, after hearing a few high-end Grados yesterday at the Bay Area meet, I have concluded that if I were to buy any Grados at all, it would definitely be the PS-1. They are brilliant sounding cans and perform tremendously well with trance/hip-hop/techno/dance/etc.!! They pretty much rock on all other genres as well. It's too bad they aren't in normal production and are a little pricey

Is it still OK to love my R10s? Are they now a $4K anachronism. I doubt it. I am beginning to think it is all to easy to keep chasing your own tail in this hobby. At some point, you have to just sit down and play the music and say, this is just fantastic. And I bet you can get there with less than I have spent. I know you can. Until I heard the R10s, I thought the Senn650s were great. I would spend hours listening and just marvelling, because all I had before those was a cheap set of Sony wireless jobs. I agree, you can hear the difference easily, but both are good in their own right. Some might prefer the Senns, no? It does come down to personal preference and the kind of music the idividual listens to.

Also, are electrostatics no longer needed? I mean, dynamic phones that are more accurate than electrostatics? Are they "faster" in response? How can that be, I mean, from a physics and design standpoint. I thought electrostatics are by definition fast, and at least in speakers have tremendous treble and mids. They often need help (active woofers) for the bass. I can't wait to hear the Qualias, but doubt I'll buy anything expensive for a while. I have to enjoy myself with what I have now.

The 010 isn't even close to being Sony's first open headphone, just the latest in an evolution of many predecessors.

Really? I don't really know Sony's model-palette history, but I was referring to top headphones such as the R10 and the CD 3000. What open high-end phones did Sony produce? (I wouldn't call the MDR-F1 -- which I've owned -- high end.)

Edit: Sorry, didn't notice you already mentioned the F-1

Oh, that's why! heheh

I thought I'd gone crazy b/c I didn't remember seeing JaZZ mention the F-1. Only now did I notice he later edited it in.

(and yes, here at Head-Fi, the power of instant email notification is not to be underestimated )

I caught that too zoide! I thought you were being funny by saying that, but it seemed to be a mistake.

NO!

The RP010 is a SS amp. not a hybrid.

The RP010 is another thing respect to the RP5... another world ... Inside of the amp you can read this: "HIC SUNT LEONES" (?????????).

Best!

He edited the post, the F-1 was not mentioned the first time....
BTW there are many members that would do consider it high end.....depending on the amp and gear associated, it could sound very good....FWIW

Ever heard of meets?

There were quite a few HD650's there. I was the one responsible for bringing the Headroom Meetpack which had the Blockhead and an HD650 cabled with Balanced Cardas Neutral Reference headphone cable. It was hooked up to Doug's (ServingInEquador) Electrocompaniet CDP. Which I believe qualifies for your all important $10,000 price point.

Was quite a treat to hear the HD650 maxed out against a maxed out Omega II. And sorry, the HD650 loses IMO.

Oh, and there was a nice Accuphase SACD player there, it retails for nearly $16,000, but the street price does not meet the $10,000 price point.

Gave a lot of quality time to the HD650's with that same Balanced Cardas NR with the Balanced Reference Gilmore with the Meridian 588 and Linn Ikemi as well. But they don't quite reach the $10K mark, so they're obviously crap.
