As the amps and sources got better ther other phones have been sold off. This is the reason I now only own the HD650. These have just been my findings.

But, here's the centre of my argument, I'd put it to you that you're not comparing apples with apples. Custom cables? Amps voiced for the respective phones (bearing in mind that practically every amp designer voices / builds their amps for the HD580/600 'because it's what everyone else uses')? The other phones are tonally somewhat-to-very different from the HD600/650. The RS-1 is perhaps the least capable of the lot in technical terms, but if an amp is built around it I'd say it has every chance of standing side by side with the HD650. Ditto the CD3000, W2002 and DT880.

With the modded WAD, I ended up with the nearest thing to a "Sybil" amp. I could hear the above with the HD600/Cardas, CD3K, DT880, W2002 and RS-1.

Anyway, back to the Q010...

yeah, your sony earbuds are defenately the most neutral

Heh, well actually the Grado HP-1000's are the most neutral phone. Both the Omega II and the Orpheus have more colourations in different bands as compared to the Grados. No biggy since the above two phones best it (from what I have read) in resolution, air, and all around goodness (though according to folks like carlo and grinch, it's just a matter of taste, one is an attractive woman whispering into, nigh licking one's ear, while the other is the same women, sexy, across the room tantalizing with her ethereal voice.

I'm pleased to read the Qualia's are as resolving as the stax. If they are also neutral like the HP-1000s (which many find boring) this can may not appeal as much as the R10's do to folks. I want to try a pair, if only because they look incredibly comfy. Once I read some further impressions I will start to seriously consider. No need to change my amp for this phone (dynamic still) so that makes me happy.

Now...I want an R10/Qualia/HP-1000/Omega II/HE90 competition Get to it folks!

Are you talking about your personal experience? FYI, this is not my personal point of view at all, I have received a very good service from them every time I have needed from them....I know that others were less fortunate, but just my two cents, to state that this is not the standard in Sony's customer service....

As I said, I'll do not post any pics untill I receive the RP010. I'll post the pics of the "Qualia system".

The cord of the Qualia is different fom all the others cables I saw in headphones, this cord is rigid and thin, the jak is havy and big...

The sound of the Qualia is very, very airy, the soundstage is BIG. The dynamic is excellent. I cannot find any "lack" in frq.

The sound of the Omega respect to the Qualia is "wet". The Qualia sound is "dry" but not fragile...

You can find a headphones colored only when you try another one that is more neutral to your ears. I think that is not so hard to define a "respect" between two systems, you have (IMO) the possibility to judge one more or less colored than the other. Everyone has recorded in his mind-ears the sound of "life".

Best!
Nicola

I must take your word for that.

i only heard the grado 325 and is very neutral and detailed but as you said also very boring. the bass was not as good as the hd650 though.

there are also people saying that the orpheus is more neutral driven with another amp. still alot of arguments about wich phone is most neutral.
there are even people who say that the R10 is not colored at all. I find the stax phones very neutral and resolving.
since i haven't had the pleasure yet of auditioning the hp 1000, the stax still remains the most neutral phones for me.

the best speakers are still dynamic setups. in the real high end speaker business, the elektrostats seem not to be able to compete.
One of the reasons must be the restricted soundstage, wich is "trapped" in the drivers. the dynamic setups really manage to go outside the speaker and create wide and deep soundstages.
since this is not a big issue for phones, maybe that's why it took so long for dynamic cans to be able to "beat" elektrostats in this segment.

Actually, the biggest issue for electro-static drivers in speakers is typically dynamic range (absolute SPL,) closely followed by dispersion. Martin Logan has largly addressed both issues. Neither constraint or design challenge applys to headphone design. That being said, the third and final issue is that of high voltage bias and impedence conversion. Most speaker & headphone designers don't want to be encumbered with those challenges.

It would be interesting to hear a pair of these. I doubt I'll ever encounter them and I'm too poor to afford either these or the R10. Some day I might run into them. Until then I can't say anything other than congrats on your purchase and I hope you find them worth the money, which I'm sure they are.

Cheers,
Geek
