First of all, I hope this is a software problem and not a moderator thing...

If not, I'm a little upset... there's a thread in the For Sale forum where a guy is selling the AKG K1000+SAC amp, and for a decent price too ($800). Someone replied wondering if that combo sounded better than the W2002, and whether it was a joke or not, I've heard both and tried to help the seller out, simply stating that the K1000 sounded better than the W2002. Come back, and both posts are deleted!

Now, this wasn't thread crapping, and sure, it may have been a controversial subject with all the AT fanboys whining about not having a review in the permanent review section, but hey, I've auditioned both for a good amount of time, and just shared my opinion. If a moderator thought it was appropriate to delete my reply, I would at least expect an e-mail or PM from the moderator explaining the situation and the cause for deleting a perfectly innocent post.

If my post was deleted because of a moderator was worried that it may stir up something that doesn't belong in that forum, then I think the replies to my post should have been deleted, because they truly are thread crapping. I always thought this site was well moderated, but I'm starting to change my opinion. Again, I hope this is just a big misunderstanding and a problem with the forum software...

[sarcastic] Yes, Head-Fi is so poorly moderated....we should just shut the joint down, eh? Hell in a handbasket, I say! [/sarcastic]

First of all, I'll start off by saying it wasn't me. I'm not sure who did it.

What I would have done was move the post asking (and your reply) to a new thread in the headphone section. Why? Because I don't want to encourage in-thread discussions inside the "for sale" forum about "this is better than that." Why? Because the answer could have also gone the other way and then undermined the sale based on that opinion. I understand if you were trying to be helpful, but I also think the moderator was trying to be helpful too. Someone might have followed up your post disagreeing with you. The "for sale" forum just isn't the place for that.

I agree, though, that if someone moderated you, they should've contacted you too. Again, I didn't do it, and I don't know who did.

I really don't think it was a "power trip" as you describe it, and I think you're being quite dramatic in suggesting that that's what it is. And I certainly don't think this place is poorly moderated.

Hi guys,

Sorry about that, but I must admit I did it. And I should have sent a pm to both you and the other poster (who I thought was thread-crapping, though not intentionally).

What happened was I viewed the thread and saw only one reply, that one being, "hehehe, I wonder if this beats the ATH-W2002?"

I deleted it and was about to send a pm to the poster saying why this was wrong, but when I got back to the thread after the deletion (it goes back automatically), I saw Flumpus's reply saying "yep, it sure does." If both posts had been there when I first visited the thread I likely would have done nothing, but since your post was floating out there replying to nothing in particular, I deleted it.

I'm sorry if this offended anyone -- I was just trying to clean up the post but I happened to be doing it at a very inopportune time. Please keep in mind that we all have other things in our lives to do (Neruda: "blasphemy!") and that we all make mistakes.

Plus, thread-splitting-and-then-moving-leaving-a-redirect is a headache (and people don't seem to appreciate it so much, gathering from what I did with the Head-Fi Banning/Prog. Rock threads).

Dan

I think it's unfair to say something like that after one problem. In my opinion we moderators are doing a pretty darn good job keeping everything working properly on this forum. How often do you see misplaced threads? how many double posts? how much spam? we keep this place pretty clean, and you shouldn't say something that insults all of us when one person made one mistake. That's unfair.

I agree, guys! Hats off to 'ya! I think you do a great job. Whenever a site becomes over-moderated, people leave in droves.

I, for one, salute your restraint!

How can you say something like that? I can honestly speak for all the moderators and say we have nothing against any of the members here. We are only human, and we do occasionally make a mistake, but does that mean we are poor moderators? It offends me. I'll repeat it. IT OFFENDS ME to hear you question our moderating ability.

We try to be fair and just. We have nothing against argument -- in fact it is highly encouraged. It stimulates thinking. We always think over the merits of why we should keep a post rather than why we should edit it or delete it.

How often do you see spamming and flaming and trolling on the forum? Not often. Why? Because we deal with them on our own. We do our very best to make the boards as good as we can, and when people attack us, it hurts. If you have a problem, ask us in a polite, civil manner and we will do our best to resolve it. But don't yell at us. It does no benefit.

I think the moderators do a good job of keeping this site from becoming another victim of its own success. I've had posts removed in the past and was pm'd on one, but not the other, not a big deal in my opinion. I've never felt the moderators take sides in a personal sense. Keep up the good work guys.

Yes, this is the first time I've been affected by a moderator doing something, but there have been countless othere threads that I felt were getting nowhere, they got nowhere, and should have been locked.

I probably meant to offend the moderators, because I feel that when you do something like this with no explanation (granted, I appreciate Dan's explanation, was hoping for PM though) it's very offensive to the user. I was offended... I didn't do anything wrong yet I'm being censored? That's how I felt. Not how I feel now, after Dan's explanation, but before you go off on me, try to think how you would feel if you made a legitimate post and it was deleted with no explanation.

Well, you got your explanation. And, again, I don't encourage those types of discussions within a "for sale" post for obvious reasons. Though you were trying to help the seller, subsequent posts could have done the opposite. I explained in my above post the action I would have taken had I been the one moderating that thread (I'd have moved both posts to the headphone forum).

So the misstep was Dan not sending you a PM, right? Well, he apologized.

As far as your criticisms of how the site is moderated: I'm sure we'll take that into consideration.

Flumpus, I get that, but you basically called us all out for what one person did. besides, we usually do send PMs (this is the first time I've heard of a post being deleted without the user being notified). So don't say we're doing a bad job when we make a few mistakes. Like moo said, we're only human.

I only called you all out because I didn't know who did it. Now that I know, and realize what happened, I'm not mad... I feel much better about bringing it up so that all moderators might learn something and think to PM someone when they move/delete a thread.

Again, I'm not mad at anyone now, and am completely satisfied with the explanation. I understands Jude explanation of why it didn't belong there, but that's not why I was mad. So I think everything has been addressed...

Neither did we. You could've simply asked, eh?

Yes I could have asked, but I was offended, and I'm not going to change my opinion that my original post was wrong. It did excatly what I wanted it to do.

It's a question of tact, Flumpus. Apparently, that wasn't your concern. Drama for results. Yeah, it worked. Bravo.
