Hi everyone, I just joined and am new to the high quality audio world. After browsing around the forums, I've come up with a plan for my first (cheap) setup and I wanted to get some feedback on it.

I am planning on running a RPi3 Model B w/ Runeaudio or Volumio into a Schiit Magni / Modi stack and then purchasing some used HD 600 or 580 headphones off ebay. Is this a reasonable plan for a relatively inexpensive first audiophole-type setup (I could be overlooking something important)?

Thanks for the feedback!

That probably wouldn't be a bad start at all. If you can get it and find out what your sound preference from there. You have to start somewhere and that is not a bad start at all. Is there better yes no doubt but you have to figure what you like first.

That's right!. I just want a dedicated computer that I can play lossless files through. That way I'm not having to shuffle my laptop around constantly / can work on it simultaneously. I've also always wanted to mess around with one and this seems like the perfect opportunity.

Hi Mardog,

I have put together exactly the same system as I recently started my journey. Runeaudio worked straight out of the box however I couldn't get Volumio to play some high resolution files. I have my Qnap media directory set up as a network mount and have the Raspberry Pi/Modi2u/Magni2u/lcd-3f as my bedside setup. It generally works well however very high resolution files are not always streamed over my network properly. I've got a portable drive I mean to copy my media onto to see if that's any better but not had time yet.

I'm quite happy with this setup but I have always viewed it as a step to something else. I'm planning on upgrading amp next but at the moment I'm really not sure what to get to work best with the LCD-3f.

That's awesome, @PaulClark. Yeah this is definitely a first step, but I'm pretty excited about it. I'm planning on setting up a network mount as well.

As far as upgrades, my next purchase would probably be a new amp as well. In my preliminary research, I think the Bottlehead Crack could be sweet. I'm going to enjoy this first set up for a while tho!

That would be a great first setup.

For help setting up the pi check this thread:

Also any feedback you have on using the Pi setup and how it sounds is appreciated.

As a heads up volumio didn't play nice with my Modi 2 in the past.  It only spit out a garbled / staticy version of the song.  This was probably a year ago now so it may have been fixed.  I would just check the volumio forums and see if things are working.  I had no issues with RuneAudio with my Modi 2 which is how I ended up using it over volumio.

The Crack would be ok with the 600's Or 580's as they both have 300 ohm impedance . I really enjoy mine.
