WTB: HD650 Stock Cable or low cost aftermarket cable

If you have an unused stock HD580/6x0 (preferably HD650) cable laying around I will gladly buy it off you. I will also need the Short cable reducer to 1/8 jack if the wire is terminated to 1/4.

I have a HD580, the left channel went out on me. The left earpiece works with the right plug connected to it, it is the left plug that does not work, or more specifically the wire right under the semi-flexible rubber part of the connector.

$34 at that site for a replacement stock cable is alittle too expensive.

How about trying to fix the plug? If it's a bad contact due to shrinked diameter you can try to coat it with some tin-solder (take care not to melt the plastic piece!). If it's a broken wire inside the plug, you're lost. If it's a broken wire inside the cable, you may be able to provisionally fix it. Otherwise I can recommend the Oehlbach cable sold by Jan Meier, which sounds better than the stock cable.

The wire right under the semi-flexible plastic (or rubber?) part of the connector is the one that gives me trouble. If I wiggle enough I might get sound for a second or two. I have the tools to solder, my soldering iron is alittle overpowered, and I am not very experienced. I will give it a try but I will still buy another stock cable incase my work does not last.

Ummm . . . I don't know what you were looking at, but on the Sennheiser website the replacement cable is listed as (Copied & Pasted directly from their webpage):

Retail Price $16.80

Discount $0.00

Online Price $16.80

In addition, if I understand you correctly, it is the 1/8" stereo plug end which has the connection problem (not the little 2-prong connector that inserts into each ear-cup) . . . this is easily repaired (if you are able to solder).

I suggest you do a search in the DIY Forums here and at HeadWize, I know I have seen someone post details on this proceedure (particularly concerning the laquer-insulated/kevlar reinforced wire).

Hey worst case it does not work and you have to spend the $16.80 at the Sennheiser site.
