I finally bought speakers, OH NO-rh!! - Page 2

I bought a used pair of 4.0's for my girlfriend and was impressed by how good they do sound. I didn't expect to like them a lot but they look kinda cool, which I knew would win her over. As with most small monitors, a sub helps with bass extension.

I picked up a jvc digital receiver for not a whole lot of money to amp my speakers (replacing a semi dual mono 150wpc power amp and tube pre) and am satisfied. I'm going to try to live with this setup for a while until I get significantly more money, and luckily, it doesn't sound like it will be too hard to do.
yeah I know there not the best but what other floorstanders can you buy at $300?

I am sereiously asking and not being a smart butt

i am getting them in a hour, the dude is dropping by my house so...

man the last speakers I bought was a bose cube system 10 years ago..
and no these speakers are not replacing the bose, as in I dont even have any speakers in my room.

Seriously, not much. The only floorstanders I would consider in that price range would be vintage jbl monitors, which is an iffy proposition because they all used foam surrounds which are probably rotted out by now.

well I havent heard them much but in my fast setup and 30min listening to them I must say They are nice...now my room needs tweaking.

I give a more in dep impression once I can spend some time with them

I spend half my time listening to headphones, half listening to speakers, and the other half....wait, there is no other half.
Now I see why there isn't enough time in my schedule to listen to music. Must fix that!

Seriously, though...just like having more than one headphone, speaker listening is an entirely different type of joy. Life is to short to have only one woman, or listening source (did I write that out loud?),

well from what I have noticed so far and alot is this...

headphones seem to work around you, where you have to work around speakers.

meaning that since I get home from work in the wee hours of the night I find it tough to listen to speakers, where i can just throw on a set of headphones and be done with.
This week I will be working some messed up hours and I only can see myself getting a hour window each day to listen to the speakers, but I should be getting ready for work in that hour so my listening time is cut even more.

I also noticed a very different sound from the speakers comparing to headphones, even more different then I thought.

meaning that I hear and feel alot of bass from sounds like a male voice from the speakers, even with the ps-1's this is no such thing from headphones..
weird but kind of more "real" at the same time.

room acoutistics are mor enportant then I thought..

meaning that I had to spend a week of cleaning the room just to make enough area to put the speakers in but they are demanding more room and better acoutistics then I thought, after I nail a good speaker amp I will be set on cheap room treatments to get the most out of the setup in the later.

these are first thoughts from the small timed listening I had with them, It was different but I want to listen to them more and have no feel for headphones at the moment, infact last night I didnt even listen to the headphones at all...which is odd for me

My experience with my speakers improved dramatically once I bought a decent amp and preamp. I have Totem Rokks speakers and Sunfire Symphonic Reference amp and pre. At the moment I am using my Eddie Current HD300 as a pre and it sounds great. Now I have a dilemma, do I sell the Sunfire stack and buy a seperate amp and phono stage to use with the EC. This would save a lot of room.

One of the great thing about speakers is your not tied down as you are with headphones. I use my headphones at night and most of the other time I use my speakers. While I definitely enjoy my headphones, in the end I think I prefer speakers. I think speakers give you a closer experience to live music than headphones and you get a better sense of soundstage through speakers.

Enjoy your speakers!

Gopher, I never read a full blown impressions thread from you either

ooheadsoo,

I typically get excited by new gear and can't help but post impressions/opinions. I've been more reserved about commenting on non-headphone gear, but though I commented on most versatile products. I've even got a couple featured reviews... Oh well, I'll try to be more vocal in the future.

Gopher: not a slam, no pressure I just think all of us could benefit from your experience with your speakers

has totem rokks and recently switched from a Sugden A28B to something else. You might be interested in reading his impressions and/or asking him some questions.

Billy, I think you're on to something. You've got the right idea. Acoustics are so essential to speakers and room treatment is really a must, imo, once you get a reasonably good rig going. My sub 200hz room modes are just killing me. On one hand, I'm getting bass extension down to 35hz with my 5" woofer bookshelves, which is bizarre but perhaps not too deleterious, but I have a major 10+db suckout around 100hz and a 5-7db peak centered around 140hz no matter what speakers I use.

so I just got done doing a amzing listen session for a good 2 hours with the speaker setup and all I can say is...yawn!!!

its so relaxing and just beautiful it relaxs me to the point of yawning and streching so much, but thats so good.
I really wanted the speaker setup to do just that, unlike my headphones when I listen to the speakers I dont think of nothing but the music. I postioned the speakers and the lazy boy in a triangle, hooked up the eddie current as a preamp and let that and the old pos technics receiver warmup a bit. then I turned all the lights off and only had a small dim on 2 wall lights behind me. I then sat down reclined and was just amazed when I pressed play. I listened to Frank Sinatra best of cd2 twice and it just got better and better. the way his voice comes in on the dead center makes you think there is a hidden speaker, but all the thrumpets and sounds like that come from either the right of left or both. but the low end bass guitar fills the entire wall but its not even close to over powering. I just wanted to close my eyes and recline more and more and just enjoy. I feel like a magazine ad where you se the guy sitting back and faceing the 2 speakers and doing nothing else...wow

the best part is this is the worest it will sound, once I get a decent tube amp and do the acoustic treatments it shall be even the better. The coolest thing about today was I enjoyed the music, it didnt matter what I was useing or how much it cost. I sat there for the music and felt it at the same time.

I kept running upstairs and asking my parents if its to loud and they kept saying "no cant even hear it"..yes!! this means I can open up alot more time to the listening of this setup then I thought.

the $650 for a jolida amp is becoming more easy for me as the more I listen..lol

Cool, glad you're enjoying them. Nice thing about most Norh speakers is they aren't too picky about the rest of the chain.
