Help with DAC noise - SOLVED

Thread Starter

Hello everyone,

I recently bought HD800 headphones along with Icon audio HP8 valve amp.

While using this combo in my family home along with Micromega MyDAC (not USB powered) and iMac everything was fine.

Upon moving the setup in my flat I noticed noise started appearing when DAC is powered and connected to laptop or iMac as well.

What would be the best solution for this?

New power supply for DAC, good USB cable, USB filters like JitterBug, regen, Wyrd etc ?

Any help would be appreciated!

So your connecting the computer (PC or Mac) to the MyDAC, using USB.

My two cents.

Might try using an optical connection instead, as there might be a feedback loop using USB.

Also try plug the devices into separate power strips.

Try plugging the power strips into separate wall sockets.

Try connecting to your laptop without the power brick plugged in.

The laptop was on battery.

I don't have optical on iMac, separate power strips are not affecting the problem.

Will move my setup to a different room to test wall socket problem.

I think the problem is coming from power lines as this is an old building.

Thx. for all the suggestions

Probably the dac power supply or dirty power from the mains. Try pluging it in at a different power socket at a different place to confirm. Can get an power conditioner or get this. http://ifi-audio.com/portfolio-view/accessory-dcipurifier/

Load the trial version of Audirvana software.

DAC power should be ok as everything was fine in my other apartment.

The problem with iFi conditioner is that I have double barrel power connector right on the DAC itself and iFi uses just a single one as output.

And yes I use Audirvana.

Some Macs use the same jack for both headphones and optical output.

(if you did not know already)

I changed the preamp 12ax7 valve to Mullard long plates today and the noise went away. :)

Never would have guessed that was the problem all along.

I still want to upgrade my data cable, I didn't know I have optical in my iMac :)

Do you know if the implementation is ok, and if it's a better solution than usb for DAC connection?
