That I don't know - not heard the Hugo. Personally, although it's marketed as such, I don't regard the Hugo as a 'portable' device - I certainly wouldn't want to be lugging it about whilst on-the-go - & given the Hugo's 'only' a dac/amp requiring the addition of a source, I have trouble thinking of it vs QP1R as a like-for-like comparison.

FWIW, I tried the Mojo (with an iPhone 6s), but it wasn't for me - & it only altered, rather than improved, things when paired with the QP1R.

I do carry the Hugo three hrs commuting in Hong Kong. Using Hugo with a phone. Phone has a big screen I can view while jumping onto trains and buses.

Sure, I realise people do, but that's just not for me.

By all means, if you don't mind the bulk, or the cost, the Hugo is the way to go. I doubt any standalone DAP will ever beat it.

I do mind the bulk, though. So for me, a DAP must be good enough to stand on its own without sounding as though its lacking in any area. For instance, only when I do a direct comparison with the NFB-28 does my AK120ii feel small or in any way inadequate. Yet, when I'm at work, there's nothing about its presentation that disappoints. It's smooth, faultless, and oh so musical.

I couldn't say that about the FiiO X5. Though it is a great sounding device, you can hear its limitations. The soundstage could be grander, and the rendering more refined. One does not need to compare it to a full-size DAC to perceive its faults.

This is why I still haven't upgraded from the Astell&Kern. It satiates my critical ears.

thank you

Probably with Galaxy V1, but even then very fleetingly. V2 has a gentler, shimmery treble that reveals enough detail and isn't harsh. It's more forgiving than V1 and is a great match with QP1R.
