Audio Technica ATH-E70, ATH-E50, ATH-E40 IEMs announced at NAMM 2016

Read the release notes that said March 2016 release.

As for the high end question, I am pretty sure they will be polite and smooth as a monitor should being a pro tool. Can't have sibilance or ear fatigue with a bright or peaky high end in a monitor unless it is badly tuned which AT won't do. I don't think it will roll off really early but it won't extend like the E70 will and it will be pretty even and short of bright or really crisp. Probably most like the CKR9 LTD treble and not as much energy up top as a CKR9. They say powerful bass so they will likely be warm like many monitor earphone are esp. if used as a personal listening phone but plugged into stage equipment or enough amplification they will tighten up more and give more balance.

Odd the specs:

Japanese E40 site (https://www.audio-technica.co.jp/mi/show_model.php?modelId=2812):

U.S E40 site:

Impedance39 ohms
Weight9 g (0.3 oz), without cable
CableDetachable 1.6 m (5.2') with A2DC connectors
Connector3.5 mm (1/8") gold-plated stereo mini-plug, L-shaped
Accessories IncludedCarrying case, silicone eartips (XS/S/M/L)

Thats what always happens actually..............
Japan releases are almost always higher quality.......... which is why i bought my CKR-9s in Japan .
This also explains the Price and SQ difference between Japan spec models  and Aliexpress lower spec / factory seconds .

IEMs sold in Japan are higher spec most of the time as Japanese have higher standards i presume.

I don't think so as the other two E's have the same specs. The CKR for both markets have the same specs and are the same(AT U.S. and AT Japan official stuff, no Ali or ebay stuff or seconds or rejects etc).

I think we may have reason for the difference. ATH-IM70 was never coming to market here and some other Japan markets. Perhaps we do get tweaked E40 and the Japanese get a bit different E40 that doesn't fill that slot but actually fits above the IM-70?
I guess the only way to know for sure is to compare both. Still 12,000 yen / $100 though. Seems easier to drive and is marketed as Pro or street and not just Pro like US and EU.

I wonder how Aliexpress gets those factory seconds or whatever but they do have a huge price gap.

US version $269 for the CKR-9s if im not mistaken and $ 100+ only for the Aliexpress version.

Need? No. Want. Yes!

Anyhoo, I found a picture(not great) of the accessories. Looks like a new case and the obligatory 6.3mm adapter for "Pro" stuff...

The E70 adds on pair of foams tips. Could they spare them for $549 MSRP and $399 street price, lol!

Also read an opinion, a very general one, from NAMM that after a short listen the IM series would still be better for personal listening. That is what the E is about, being a monitor type monitor. Not nearly enough info in that statement to discern anything really.

BS Marketing crap. They just made $549 up to make you think you are getting a good deal at $400. They are really $400 which is actually the standard price nearly everyone puts on a triple in today's market. Sony was more fair with $299 and you can buy it for less though those are not an over ear design like most and are not a "Pro" like the E70 or things like a Westone Pro30 are billed.

Of course in 2016 these silly fake MSRP's are hopefully being ignored and treated like background noise. Nobody is getting a deal on the E series at the opening street prices which are what they want to sell them for.  AT Japan just puts Open Price while the US puts $559MSRP and you click on it to say that the actual price will vary. Of course all we want to know is the actual price :)

Wow, I'm really interested to hear the E40 and the E70. Let's hope they will be available in Japan when I visit Tokyo this February/March.

Looks like this will continue my track record of buying a new Audio-Technica IEM every time I visit Japan.

Sorry, odd thing is they are March in the US but April 15th is the date for Japan. Of course Japan are good with their release dates so I doubt they will come early.

Well, that is a shame, since this new series looks highly interesting. Hopefully they'll have demo units at Yodobashi or E-Earphone in March. Will report back if they do.

Sweetwater posted a video overview, looks like they'll be selling too.
The BA model housings look similar to the CKB70 shape/nozzle angle (but with over-ear cable), which would be perfect because IM series did not get along with my outer-ear.

Somebody should tell Audio Technica to change their stupid, useless silicone tips as they are awful. Also I didn't like the new transparent ugly outer shell design. What the hell? Thanks but I'll stay with my CKR9.

lol... yeah, though I have actually found them good with some other headphones... they were the best tips for me with the fx850 when I had it.
