Already had a mini-purge in 2017 and planning on not needing a 3rd HD800S

.   The prices on used HD800S are pretty good these days.  A very good way to go for those looking at buying one for the first time.

I was just listening to my new el8 open and comparing it to the 800S.. I love the Dynamics and fun musicality of the el8 but wow it's such a huge difference when going back to back .. soundstage and imaging and transparency is just nuts on the 800S. Amazing headphone that keeps getting better.

Anyone tried the 800S with the headtrip? I'm getting a new one sent to me soon.. although i would guess a power hungry planar might suit it better.

That would be pretty great but the first 20 or so probably went to staff or something if I had to guess

Who knows... I thought the same about the Z1R but then a Head-Fi'er actually received the unit with serial #0001, from Amazon :D

It's taken a couple of hours of listening for my brain to latch back on to The HD800S unbelievable natural sound but now that I have I'm back to being directly connected to the music.
I realise why I sold these, it's because they are just so damn neutral and natural. It's boring.
The thing is though, I can just enjoy the music without being annoyed by some quirk that seems to colour the music that every other headphone I've ever had does.
I won't make the mistake of selling these again!

Curious, the number of people who sell and re-buy the 800. I think that shows how it's not a fully satisfactory model, but at the same time it has something special that seems to be hard to find in others.

I guess I can almost include myself in that group, since I sold my 800 S and then bought the 800 [non-S] since I felt I was missing something.

I don't think it is missing anything. It just doesn't add anything like every other thing I ever listen to. I tend to listen to headphones after a day in bust environments, hearing crappy stereos like in my car that add distortion and bass etc.
Suddenly I expect my brain to accept the HD800 sound and to enjoy it for a quick audio fix.
If I listen to any other headphone for a few hours my head starts to work out its flaws and they become irritating, the Hd800S on the other hand just gets better the more I listen. That is a problem in this modern world of instant fixes and satisfaction.

I think the 820 may be their new amp, but I'm not sure. Sennheiser usually takes their sweet time about things so I wouldn't worry too much about it for now.

The HDV 820 is already announced, there is speculation that Sennheiser might release a HD820 also.

From the picture I've seen of the HD820 it looks like a closed back design so it won't be a replacement for the 800S.

I personally doubt it will be closed back but who knows.
