Favorite and most hated instruments?

My Favorite: A few weeks ago it might have been the organ, but now it would be a toss up between violin and guitar.. I play a bit of guitar and listening to a nice piece is always very enjoyable, violins are amazing in orchestral works.. But I guess it always depend on the piece too! Hmm.. voices too! Bah, just one, because of its versatility, lets say the violin!

Most hated: Harpsichord, gawd I hate that instrument...

What are yours?

Favorites: Guitars, Keyboards, Violin, Flute, Clarinet, Drums, Bass.....

Hated: TRUMPET, and wind-metals in general, specially while played in an strident way.....latin percussion, I hate that sh*t, why Santana has to use it, (IMO he will sound a lot better without it at all.....)

Harpsichords can sound good -- The Strangler's Golden Brown uses it well, for example.

I'd say my favorite would have to be the guitar. There's just so many different types, playing styles, and sounds you can get out of it that sound good (name another instrument you commonly hear in both classical and punk rock), I can't honestly pick another instrument.

As for least favorite, it'd have to be that synthesizer you hear in cheesy "Easy Listening", where it almost sounds like real piano, or strings, or a horn section if you're not listening carefully, but has all the soul of saran wrap. The fact that there are people who would use synth in this way is actually making me angry, just to think about it.

Favorites would probably have to be the piano and violin. Most hated... well, bad synthesizers of course takes the cake, but I'm no so sure I would classify that as an instrument, per se...

favorite: piano--percussion with a human voice.

hated: cheesy, wailing saxophone. when played correctly the sax can be nice, but when it's bad it's awful.

It's all a matter of taste, really.

Favorites :
electric guitars, acoustic guitars, nearly every plucked acoustic guitar and lute like instrument (rare ethic ones). Violin, Cello and other like instruments in the bow family. Basically I like strings Also really like Basque instruments like the trikitixa (basque button accordion) and txalaparta. I also love the gaita (spanish bagpipes). Certain types of flutes are cool as well. Drums are alwasy nice in the hands of a skilled player. Finally the Hurdy Gurdy, just because it sounds so creepy and cool

Most Hated :
Most Brass instruments, I just find them very annoying, unless it's classical music, but nothing else. Whistles, why would anyone want to listen to that in a song? Synthesize drums, argh just use a real drummer, please! Also anything that sounds new age or some crap like that. I also do not like that turntable scratching garbage, that is painfully annoying.

All that said, I am sure that you might be able to find some highly skilled players that can make any instrument sound great to anyone. I am also sure that you can find bad musicians that will make me hate my favorite instruments as well.

favorite: cowbell

hated: The synthesizer, but only in the hands of Timberland. <in Timberlands head> "Hey, you know what this song needs... a baby oogling in the background. It the only way I can top "one in a million's" air-whistling-through-a-cracked-window for most annoying background sound in an otherwise cool song."

I think it's hilarious that more than one person wrote that they hate most brass instruments.

You, sir, not only have an excellent musical taste, but you are also correct.

As for me: I've always been partial to the flute. When used with skill it can convey a bigger range of emotions than most instruments. Or so I think. However the potential for abuse is horrid. Horrid I tell you. Some of the worst sounds I've heard involved flutes.
As for the worst... I can't really decide. Any instrument, no matter how horrible (lol brass instruments lol), can be used to a good effect. And vice versa with good instruments I guess.

In conclusion and after contradicting myself several times I think I'll have to say there isn't one best instrument. Any one instrument can be used in its niche, and any one instrument can be abused.

very true, after all, flutes have been used in both some of the most beautiful music ever made and some of the most horrific music ever created.
