Fostex x Massdrop TH-X00 Review
Mar 23, 2017 at 4:03 PM Post #9,961 of 12,070
Your comment about me being used to super bassy headphones is absolutely true. This was my main concern when I ordered the TH-X00s on Massdrop: am I going to feel a little disappointed by some "relative" lack of sub bass?

I recognize that the perceived quality (definition, clarity, impact) of the bass (and sub bass) on the TH-X00 is a good level above the M-100s, I just wish it had a flatter response below 60Hz (I know I'm being picky

)

I had a X1, HE400, TH-600 a few other headphones when I got a M-100 and after about 2 weeks the M-100 was never used again, ended up giving them away to a friend who had Beats Pro.  The TH-X00 was to replace my TH-600 but after a week the TH-X00 was the one that was let go, the TH-600 sounds clearer, goes lower and is much more comfortable for me, mainly due to the stock ear pads.  I might revisit the TH-X00 in the future if I find pads that work better.

Thanks for your feedback on the EB version.
Thing is I got used to the bass of the V-Moda M-100s.
Yes the bass is less controlled than the TH-X00s, but it (and sub-bass more specifically) is overall louder.

I think I need to give a listen to the TH-900s as these do not seems to have the same kind of roll-off in the very low end.

To be continued...

Yeah, I'd have to agree with the other poster who said that it takes time to acclimated to a new sound profile. I was positively elated with the bass FR from the Marshall Modes until I got the TH-X00 EB. Now the Modes sound practically bass-thin compared to the Fostex. And even though the E-MU Teak and TH-X00 EB are almost identical, the EB breathes life into new wave, EDM, techno and industrial in a way that the Teaks don't. It's funny how this hobby goes.

Has anyone compared the TH-X00 w/ Lawton Stage 1 mods to the E-MU Teak? I have the Teaks, but I also have the TH-X00 on the way. I'm curious if the Lawton mods improve the TH-X00 to make them better than/ different from the Teaks.

Has anyone tried both, or point me to someone who has?

I bought them in the very first drop about 16 months ago.
Duty is 22% plus a handling fee (think about £8). Your credit card may charge a currency fee or build it into the exchange rate (if I recall correctly mine was about £5). With the exchange rate at about $1.25=£1 you are taking about the dollar price being about the same in pounds once you have added all this on.

  Hello,

Well I'd like to change the pads .... but so many options ...
Please, can you give me brief summary  about good pads options ?

Thank you in advance.

From strictly a comfort point of view I would recommend the Alpha Pads.  Way more comfortable than stock.  For me at least...

I vote for the ZMF Ori pads. I've used the Alpha Pads on other headphones, and they are also wonderful, but can't comment on them with the TH-Series. The ear hole on the Ori and Alpha Pads are both bigger that the stock pads, however. Both will go over your ear (unless you have massive ears), whereas the stock ones are sort of on the ears/sort of around the ears.

I can't comment on sound changes as I hated the stock pads' comfort (coming from Ori and Alpha Pads on other headphones).

With the Ori and Alpha pads, you will definitely get:
  1. Superior comfort
  2. Superior isolation

I'll defer to others on how these pads change the sound signature.

bigger ear hole than the stock ? no sound signature impact ?

Bigger hole than stock.  I generally do not attempt to describe sound signatures as we all hear differently.  That said I did not find the change to negatively effect sound for me.

IMHO, YMMV, yada yada yada

Hey, where can I find the original round open Denon/Fostex pads (no angled ones)?
The new iterations of these EMU/X00 are a tad bit... too small inside. I can find the original angeld Denon pads with wider openings, but the price is a bit... well, even $33 feels more.
I'm not gonna go with any larger pads as they will make the driver too distant for me. HM5 Angled sheepskin didn't work for me, so I don't think others will.

Any ideas?

I found these which may be more useful to me.

These are more open than stock right?

OR I need to find cheaper ones of these:

$118 is just... a joke to be honest.
