I was refering to anyone who says bad music sounds horrible on good equipment. You can buy less revealing stuff to make your old recordings sound more mellow and smooth, but your better recordings only suffer..though that's just my opinion on the matter. (I actually find that the imperfections in a recording just add to the song's character )

Here is an experiment I've done. I keep a really trashy TV with a mini earphone jack by my bed. I sometimes listen at night with crummy earbuds (which sound a lot better than the TV speaker).

Almost by accident, I tried this TV with my Senn HD 600 (haha, no way it will drive them, right?). Well the Senns sound about 100 times better than the earbuds. Intrigued, I tried the Ety 4s in the same TV head-out. Again, much better sound than the cheap earbuds.

Right now I am listening to Beach Boys' 'I Get Around' (one of my all time top five songs), recorded in 1962. It sounds very good with my pair of Stax.

On the other hand I know that there is just no way the song could have sounded this good in 1962. A sound like this could not have been in Brian Wilson's intentions. I have a nasty feeling that I am doing something wrong even though I enjoy doing it.

Well, sometimes I am bothered by little things like this...

Regards,

L.

I don't kno whow the album you mentioned was recorded. But I just bought an XRCD24 production of Kondrashin conducting Khachaturian. It outperformed all my CD and SACD and DVD-A. The sound is so lively, making all my digital recordings pale in comparison. These were RCA living stereo master tapes from 1958!!! I don't know what they used to monitor record production back then, but apparantly it must have been superb.
