Is there an expensive Grado/Sennheiser hybrid sounding headphone?

I am looking for a headphone that has all of the good attributes of the HD600, minus the laid-back, or "neutral" sound, plus "in the music" imaging, the same wide soundstage, plus punchy bass that can really rock-n-roll. In layman's terms, I want the ultimate rock and roll headphone. Grado's are fine, but they have no soundstage to my ears. And I also listen to pop music, so I need some smoothness, which Grado's don't quite have down pat like Senns. I have my HD497's, but I know they are not exactly flat and I can do better eventually. But all I seem to find in high-end headphones are HD600 copiers. I want to be in the music, not just a casual observer. I want to be engaged, enlightened, energized by the music, not put to sleep. Are there some headphones out there that are excellent yet put you in the music?

By all accounts the Audio-Technica ATH-W100s and Sony MDR-CD3000 should do the trick. Check out the forums for opinions on these as it is only secondhand knowledge coming from me.

The 931s are awesome! I've been listening to them most of the weekend and really like them. They sound like what you're lookin' for...

Pardon my ignorance, but what 120 ohm adapter? Is it a DIY, or an accessory from Beyer?

I'm not sure about the adaptor either... I'm listening to the 931s right now straight out of my Melos, and they have it all. Highs are spectacular, bass is slammin' when it needs to (just listening to Flight of the Cosmic Hippo), and mids are pretty darn smooth. I'm really liking these more and more with each listen. They just sound so much clearer than the Senns IMO. Hate to bring up that dreaded "veil", but that's what I'm hearing when I compare the two...

Thanks, everyone. After taking a trip over to Headroom's website, I decided I'll start saving up for a pair of DT931's, without an 120-ohm adapter, because I actually like headphones that have a slight bias towards treble. Now only if the DT931's had punchy bass, then they would be perfect. Oh well, I'll still have my beloved HD497's.

If anyone else knows of a headphone under $300 that has what I want, including punchy bass, please feel free to tell me. It's not like I'll be able to come up with $300 in one night.

Flumpus-

How do the 931's sound out of your JMT, or something other than your Melos?

They sound great in my portable system actually! Sound great out of the Max, sound great out of the Cosmic, sound great out of the Creek... That's all I tried 'em on I think. Some others may be able to comment on the MG Head...

The Melos drives them to perfection though... well, not perfection, there's something better I know, I just can't afford it

If you can, try to audition the Beyer DT770 Pro's (Pros?). Mine (old, 600 ohm version) don't have the detail the Senn's do, but other than that, they completely qualify in every way of what you're talking about. The 250 ohm version might even be improved in the detail department.

Also, you may want to upgrade the cable and/or amp the Senn HD600's properly.

Here's some info about the 931 mods...

And this is the section of that review that talks about the 931:

Unfortunately I live in an area where I can't audition anything, so I have to go on other people's ears. That's why I buy through Headroom.

For me the Sony CD1700 do kind of what you describe.

I'm wondering if the Beyer DT250-80 would do the trick? Since that is more in my price range and I could sell my stereo to get it (My Samsung DVD player has a great headphone jack on it anyways) and I never listen to my stereo anymore. The receiver just acts as a power extension cord for the DVD player.
