I'm listening to his 4 & 5 right now actually, and yes, they are wonderful recordings. I'm listening to them again in preparation for this new disc of 3 & 8 that I just ordered. It had been awhile since I had last listened, but that's making this go around even more exciting. Being originally from near the Minneapolis area, I have some allegiance to the MN Orchestra. They are really a top notch orchestra and Vanska is doing some wonderful things with them right now. I read that they just recorded the 9th this spring, due for release this fall. Good stuff!

Reviewed today at ClassicsToday by David Hurwitz who gives it a 9/10.

If the rest of the cycle comes with the same type of ratings, it will be the best cycle in SACD format.

Well, after comparing opinions here and a few others I found that call the Vanska 4/5 disk "with so-so sound" and "comfortable and competent performances which didn't just grab my attention" I must say the jury is still quite out on this one, unless SACD is a must. http://makeashorterlink.com/?Q2FC13D1D
The Zweden cycle on Philips is also on SACD and cheaper. YMMV, of course.

Now listening: Bruckner #9, Lovro von Matacic/Czech Philharmonic

Well, the linked conversations are mildly interesting. Decision in the conversation is actually split with those that aren't impressed by Rattle favoring it while those that like the Rattle finding it dull. As I don't in general care for Rattle's work, I'd probably like it.

I have become a huge fan of the Szell symphonies/piano concertos set that Bunny originally recommended. Bunny, I can't find it anymore to post a pic - it is gone?

Hi Doc,

I saw the set a while back at about $50 to $60, but haven't looked for it recently. If it's not around, I'm sure that it will resurface eventually in a new form Meanwhile, those who are flush in the wallet can go to yourmusic and get the George Szell original jackets Beethoven Symphonies (which also includes the overtures) and look elsewhere for the Fleisher-Szell piano concertos.

Edit: Doc, you really weren't trying too hard. It's still there, but it's not $30 anymore. Here's the link.

True indeed...

Even at fifty bucks it's a good deal, considering it has all the piano concerti. Also, the sonics are simply outstanding on this reissue.

I just found this on Amazon the other day and added it to my list of things to buy even though I already have the Fleisher/Szell concertos. I think it's what you're looking for. It's a great deal and I figured I could just sell my other PC set to make up some of the difference. Finally the Szell symphonies are available again other than in the ridiculously priced Original Jackets series, although I don't know why they would put this set out when they're still trying to get people to fork out the money for the OJ set.

EDIT: Bunny beat me to it. :-/

The symphonies were remastered for the Original Jackets, but as far as I know the concerti were not remastered. If they have been, then that makes it a good deal even at $50.

I have that red Szell box - I can't think of a better value set. The Piano Concertos are my overall favorite, and the symphonies are very well-played even though few of the individual recordings are at the top of my list. I got it for $43 off Amazon, which is a tremendous deal imho.

Okay, here are my favorites of each on 5/22/2006

1 - Szell/Cleveland
2 - Szell/Cleveland
3 - Erich Kleiber/Concertgebouw, or Bernstein/NYPO
4 - Celibidache/Munich
5 - Harnoncourt/COE, or Carlos Kleiber/VPO
6 - Celibidache/Munich
7 - Harnoncourt/COE, or Carlos Kleiber/VPO
8 - Szell/Cleveland, or Harnoncourt/COE
9 - Furtwangler/BPO (1942)

Jagorev,

I haven't heard Celibidache's B6. What are the tempos like? Are they fast like Szell or unbearably broad like Harnoncourt?

I'm surprised you haven't listed any HIP Beethoven except for the Harnoncourt, which is not imo, the greatest work he has done. Have you heard any of Gardiner's or Hogwood's recordings? I think Hogwood's work on the early symphonies is wonderful.

I recently re-listened to the Gardiner set I have after a long haitus from it, putting a bit of distance between it any myself. Upon re-listening I'm suprised at how startling good it really is. Even compared to the excellent Zinman set I recently picked up, Gardiner really gets to the heart of the music, more so than any other HIP performance I've heard, and certainly more than the big bander's of the last century (with the possible exception of Szell, who is the best of the big band guys). I also picked up Zinman's cd of the 3rd & 4th Piano Concerto with Bronfmann and the cd with the Triple Concerto, both were outstandingly good as well.

It's an imported product. From Europe. I just bought it in France for €22.99.
