Beethoven Symphonies - Page 24

That Gardiner set is darned cheap! The regular CD Von Karajan '63 set is more expensive in the stores. The Gardiner set is in excess of fifty dollars for me (even with the 10% discount, which is really a 4% discount after Indiana sales tax*) at Barnes and Noble.

Mark is right, though. Good sets at better prices are a winning proposal for anyone. However, EMI's GROTC and DG's Classics series make some of the really neat stuff available at a decent price.

It looks like I'll be buying the Gardiner set at some point. I guess I'll just have to put the Von Karajan Ring and my new hard-drive off for a while.

I love seeing someone so young who already knows how to prioritize.

Dang, this is a long thread...
Skip 'em all: Karajan, Szell, Walter, Harnoncourt, Gardiner...

Start buying the insanely good new set coming out of Minneapolis with Osmo Vanska. The sound is stunning - SACD by BIS! The performances thrilling to the max.
If you must have a stop gap get the Zinman.

A better bad influence is not to be found, though.

The Music Forum regulars are the sort of friend that every knows is a bad influence, but is a heck of a lot of fun at parties, cocktail gatherings, and Trivial Pursuit evenings.

In other words, Head-Fi is the friend who convinces you to mortgage the farm while listening to Mahler's 4th and discussing the relative merits of Boulez and Von Karajan.

That sums it up pretty well. Exciting for relative "newbs" like myself.

Scottder, I hate to say this, but with your collection, post count, and "time served," your not a newbie. You're "one of them" now.

Welcome to Head-Fi, sorry about all your other interests.

Rent? Schment! Of course, the good thing is I could pile all the CD's and LP's up against the doors, which would keep them from evicting me for a long while.

That's how it goes. A symphony or two on occasion, that first harmless set, a second, then a third. Control slips away so easily . . .
[Sees him living under a bridge, Beethoven CDs clutched in a brown paper bag.]

Btw, I do have the Vanska/Minnesota B4&5. Great sound and a wonderful B4. I still love the Kleiber B5 best, but it is a great start. Now, in addition to the Vannska and Zinn, you should also at least consider getting the Gardiner and look into Thomas Fey's additions to the Beethoven symphonies. His Haydn is really excellent, and I'll bet that he has something really special to give to the Beethoven.

Hmmm - Must look into the Vanska. Are they 2-channel or MC?

Depending on my mood, my two faves (as complete sets) are currently the Zinman and the Gardiner.
